Never tell a person who built their own PC that their RAM is underused. It’s like telling a woman her purse has too much stuff in it: technically true, deeply none of your business. Sam Altman found that out the hard way, and the Ram Altman memes have been rolling in ever since, mostly from gamers clutching their memory sticks like a toddler with the last chicken nugget.

Quick catch-up: Tom’s Hardware covered Altman’s case for moving PC RAM into data centers, made on the Cheeky Pint YouTube show. The OpenAI CEO called it “quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time.” In the middle of a memory shortage that already has prices doing parkour, the internet heard one thing: he wants the sticks out of your tower. I use 32GB mainly to keep 47 tabs of clothes I’m “thinking about” open, so yes, I took it personally.

Hide Your DDR4
The first wave treated memory like contraband. Gollum got a lap full of RAM, Patrick Star announced someone took his only food, and a Reddit technician posted a whole work stash of salvaged DDR4 with a warning for the tech demon to stay away. I respect it. I also have a drawer of old cables I will defend with my life, and I could not tell you what a single one of them plugs into.

Then the defenses got organized. Braveheart’s spear wall became the RAM holding line, Elon Musk posted an Inglourious Basterds edit on November 1 with the line “The people deserve to have their RAM too!”, and one X user built an actual cardboard box trap baited with memory sticks, captioned “sam come here come here.” That last one is my whole dating strategy, honestly.

Spite Is a Benchmark Now
My favorite branch is pure pettiness. If the RAM is going to be judged, people are going to waste it on purpose: 128GB for No Man’s Sky with a Lady Olenna “I want him to know it was me,” Peter Griffin scratching his back with a stick of memory, and Chrome tabs eating 2GB while a sunglasses-wearing Altman catches you in the act. It’s the energy of someone told to use less hot water who immediately takes a 40-minute shower. I have been that someone.

The Five Percent Problem
Under the jokes there’s a real gripe. Memory prices have climbed as chipmakers chase AI demand, so a pitch about better utilization lands like a landlord explaining that your spare bedroom is inefficient. The Drake meme nails it, and another post runs the same logic on your car, which is exactly where my brain went too.

The creepier Ram Altman memes cast him as the guy outside your window, sizing up your 16GB like a raccoon sizing up a trash can. Someone gave him eyebrows made of memory sticks. Someone else dropped him into the sneaking-out-of-the-bedroom comic, leaving with the RAM instead of his shoes, which is the most relatable thing he’s done all week.

Then He Became Ram Altman
And then he leaned in. When an X user asked him to rename his account to Ram Altman, he did exactly that, and his reply to the box trap photo was a simple “i lol’d.” He has also said the comments were taken out of context and that he wants people to have as much memory as they want in their computers. Too late, sir. The nickname has already been allocated.

Somewhere a 2014 gaming laptop is running at 100% just to prove a point.
