Sam Altman memes started with this Politico Decoded interview frame of Altman listening during a talk about AI trade-offs.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Politico’s new Decoded newsletter over the weekend that “the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology,” and the Sam Altman memes started arriving before the clip finished loading. Nobody asked him which bad things. Everyone just assumed they’d be the ones finding out.

What Did Sam Altman Actually Say?

Here’s the plain version, because I had to read it three times before my pulse came down. Talking with Politico’s Brendan Bordelon, Altman said he wouldn’t take a trade that guarantees no major hacks, no misuse and zero scams, because he believes people will do “orders of magnitude more” good with AI than bad. Reuters has a clean rundown of how Altman says AI benefits warrant accepting some risks, including his point that OpenAI and its rivals disagree on regulation.

To be fair to him, that’s a real argument about how loosely AI should be regulated. To be fair to me, I’m a man who reads the side effects on an ibuprofen bottle out loud, so hearing a CEO pre-approve the bad things felt like a waiter telling me the fish is mostly fine.

Who Signed Off on the Bad Things?

The biggest pile of reactions asked the same question at different volumes, and politicians got there first. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said Altman shouldn’t decide which bad things we all accept, Elizabeth Warren called the idea absurd, and Bernie Sanders posted a multiple-choice quiz of possible bad things that I am choosing not to read before bed.

Senator Ruben Gallego went the other way and answered the entire quote with one word, which is the most efficient policy statement I’ve seen all year.

Regular posters had the same complaint with fewer staffers. One said she missed the part where we elected Altman the “God-King Emperor” of acceptable costs, and another pointed out she never voted for him. I also never voted for him. I barely vote on my own lunch order.

Did He Really Just Do the Farquaad Speech?

The best single reply came from @ThomasDHowes, who quoted the news with four words and a GIF: “He did the meme.” The meme is Lord Farquaad in Shrek telling his knights that some of them may die, but it’s a sacrifice he’s willing to make, and it fits so well I briefly checked whether it was in the press kit.

Someone else pasted “Sam” into the old dril post about a lawyer begging his client to keep posting, which might be the most supportive thing anyone said about the interview all weekend.

Why Did So Many Sam Altman Memes Flip the Quote?

The last wave simply handed the quote back. If society has to accept some bad things for the greater good, plenty of people volunteered the tech billionaires to go first, and a Redditor proposed the exact same trade-off, just pointed upward.

And because timing has a sense of humor, Luca Guadagnino’s Altman movie Artificial, with Andrew Garfield playing him, premiered at the New York Film Festival last night. So in one weekend the man got a biopic and a few thousand unpaid reviews of the sequel.

Somewhere, a terms of service page just got one paragraph longer.

Confession: I cope with AI anxiety by scrolling more AI jokes, so I went straight back to AI Outage Memes After ChatGPT, Claude And Grok Went Down Yesterday and then The Popular Jobs in 2036 Sound Less Like a Career Fair and More Like the Opening Scene of a Survival Movie. Neither one calmed me down. Both were worth it.
