What happens to a windowless warehouse full of humming AI servers when the people who campaigned against it win? That’s the question behind the data center memes flooding X since last night’s midterms, where Democrats took Congress and several new governors ran on reining the buildings in. Elon Musk, a man with a rocket for every problem, had his answer posted by 1:12 a.m.

So What Actually Happened?
Here’s the straight version. Democrats won control of both chambers, with the Guardian’s tally at 228 House seats and 54 Senate seats by Wednesday morning. In the governor races, Georgia’s Keisha Lance Bottoms called for a statewide pause on new data center development, Texas’s Gina Hinojosa campaigned against their rapid expansion, and Ohio’s Amy Acton backed a conditional moratorium that makes developers cover their own utility costs. Voters in at least 14 Ohio municipalities also approved bans or restrictions.
I find all of this thrilling, because I have suspected for years that the giant beige box by the highway with no windows and 40 security cameras was not, as the sign claims, a “campus.” Nobody has ever seen a student there. Nobody has ever seen anyone there.

The Data Center Jokes Got Very Specific
The funniest branch of the data center memes is the renovation fantasy, where the country wakes up and every server farm has become something gloriously unprofitable. The community college version came from @sailaunderscore at 8:24 p.m., before most races were even called. Within hours, others had them turning into homeless shelters, mosques and daycares, the last two flipping the campaign trail’s own scare lines into the punchline.

What I love is the urgency. Nobody is proposing a tasteful zoning review. They want it gutted by morning: folding tables in, a corkboard up, a guy named Ron teaching Intro to Accounting where the cooling towers used to be. That’s the American dream, folks, overnight and with a sign-up sheet.
Put Your Hand in the Servers
Then came the looters, spiritually speaking. @hammerito posted an all-caps order for anyone near a data center to walk in and put a hand on the servers for no reason, because their GPUs are your GPUs now. Investor Justine Moore went straight to the flag, a No Data Center Is Illegal on Stolen Land banner she called a pivot to Woke 3.0. Every gamer who paid a scalper for a graphics card in 2021 felt something stir.

Ted Cruz Gets a Server Rack
Texas Senator Ted Cruz, one of the industry’s loudest boosters, got his own subgenre too. @JordanUhl’s version was short and final, the kind of sentence a reality show judge reads off a card right before the dramatic music.

So here’s my question for you, and think hard about it: if the data center down your road got converted tomorrow, what should it become? I’m voting for a 24-hour Waffle House with a lazy river, and I will not be taking questions.
Musk’s rocket-powered escape plan has a cousin in Elon Musk Lego Memes After Grok’s Order Screenshot Backfired. Ron’s accounting class would pair nicely with 20 Corporate Greed Memes That Read Like a Class Action Lawsuit in Waiting, and anyone still yelling about GPUs will feel at home in Trump Bans AI as a Word, and the Internet Keeps Saying It Out of Spite.
