Photoshop Fails Are a Crime Where the Background Always Testifies

I once whitened my own teeth in a group photo and turned myself into a lighthouse, and my aunt still asks if I’m okay. So I understand the urge. You see one tiny flaw, you reach for the slider, and three minutes later the doorframe behind you is melting like a surrealist painting. Photoshop fails are proof that confidence and skill are two separate employees, and only one of them showed up to work today.

Photoshop fails

My favorite move in all of instagram photoshop fails is the background that tries to snitch. You slim a waist, and the curtain behind it bends like it just heard a rumor. You stretch your legs, and suddenly you’re three quarters thigh, standing on a staircase built for giraffes. I have seen walls curve, tiles ripple and a perfectly innocent door warp into a funhouse mirror, all so somebody’s selfie could look exactly like nobody.

Then there are the companies, which have budgets and somehow still do this. A nose trimmer that never touches a nose, a sleep mask collage that seems to have been assembled in the dark, and a power station box where the model’s legs are doing something I’m pretty sure violates physics. This is bad photoshop with a marketing department behind it, and somebody got paid. Meanwhile a dog in a yellow sweater got human hands, which I’m choosing to see as a promotion.

The amateurs, frankly, are my people. Funny photoshop fails from regular folks have a sweetness to them, like a kid drawing a mustache on a family portrait. One guy pasted himself next to a car like a cardboard cutout at a carnival, and one couple tried a fairy tale maternity shoot where the husband came out half deer. I laughed, then remembered my lighthouse teeth, and sent them both a congratulations card.

Every one of these started with a small insecurity and a free app, and that’s the part that gets me. Nobody opens an editor planning to bend a doorway. They just want their arms a bit bigger, their face a bit smoother, their life a bit closer to the version they picture at night. The software says yes to everything, and it never tells you when to stop.

Which is why people pass these around, and not only to be cruel. It’s relief. Every warped wall is a reminder that the perfect people online are mostly regular people with a slider and a dream, and the slider is winning. I look at these and feel better about my unfiltered, slightly blotchy face, because at least the wall behind me is straight, and in this economy, that’s practically a modeling career.

The waist is snatched. The wall is bent. The evidence is posted.

If you’re still squinting at doorframes, we have more for you. Our Instagram vs reality comparisons are a masterclass in the liquify tool, and the James Fridman photoshop collection shows what happens when someone edits on purpose and with spite. You’ll also enjoy our funny fails archive and the construction fails, where the wall bending is structural. Check your own selfies afterward. Just in case.

Who needs to see this?

Send it to the friend who’ll laugh the hardest, or post it for everyone.
