The Only Rule of Halloween Food Ideas Is That Something on the Plate Has to Look Back at You

My idea of a festive appetizer used to be a bowl of candy corn with a plastic spider on top, and one year I forgot the spider. So I am in awe of people who spend October carving skulls into deviled eggs. These Halloween food ideas range from adorable to deeply upsetting, and I mean that as the highest compliment a hostess can give. Some of these snacks are smiling at you, and some of them want to be left alone, so grab a napkin and don’t make eye contact.

Mini pizzas topped with melted cheese and black olive spiders, a classic Halloween food idea.

The cute ones are dangerous, because they make you think you could do it too. Halloween treats like bat cupcakes with googly eyes and ghost cookies riding little brooms look simple, the way a figure skater looks relaxed. I once tried to make mummy cupcakes and they came out looking like they had survived a minor car accident. My guests still ate them, but they ate them quietly.

I have never been prouder of humanity than when the gross ones arrive. Spooky food peaks when it is genuinely hard to eat: witch fingers with almond nails, macarons splattered like a crime scene, cereal treats wrapped in plastic and labeled roadkill patties. Somebody made a whole cheesecake into a graveyard, and somebody else turned a skeleton into a fruit bowl, ribs and all. I want to be invited to every one of these parties, and I want to sit near the exit.

When it comes to Halloween party food, the charcuterie people have officially lost their minds, and I support it. A coffin shaped board with a meat skull is either a centerpiece or a cry for help, and either way I’m getting a plate. Even the vegetables got involved, with peppers carved like jack o’lanterns and cucumbers wearing tiny surprised faces. My crudités have never looked surprised about anything, mostly tired.

Halloween food ideas like these work because they let adults play with their food without getting sent to their room. The whole holiday is permission to be weird, and the kitchen is where grown people with mortgages finally get to make a pie that screams. Nobody needs a cucumber shaped like a brain, or a cheesecake with a tiny cemetery on top, or a pie that is clearly plotting something. That’s exactly why everybody wants one.

And underneath the fake blood and googly eyes, it’s love, the most labor intensive kind. Someone spent four hours piping a tiny ghost so a room full of people would gasp for half a second before eating it. That’s hosting, and it’s beautiful, and it’s the reason I now own a skull mold I have used exactly once. I will be bringing my candy corn again this year, but I’ll be bringing it with a lot more respect, and possibly a second spider.

The eyes are edible. The blood is jam. The hostess is exhausted.

For more October chaos, our funny kids Halloween costumes will make you return your store bought one. The cursed food collection is the year round version of these, minus the good intentions, and the weird food posts are great for anyone who likes a snack with a backstory. If you’d rather be scared than hungry, the creepy facts will finish the job. Eat the eyeballs first. They’re watching.
