Trump Brett Sylvia Memes Are Daring Reporters to Invent a Country

The best journalism idea of the year came out of a mix-up about a general’s first name, and I’m only a little mad that I didn’t think of it. On Thursday at Joint Base Andrews, a reporter asked Donald Trump about Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Army strategist Pete Hegseth fired over a Pentagon leak inquiry, according to reports. Trump answered as if Sylvia were a woman’s first name, and the Trump Brett Sylvia memes went somewhere much smarter than the gaffe itself.

If you want the exact moment, Aaron Rupar’s clip of the exchange has it in full: “She’s got problems,” followed by a promise that they’re “very much looking for leakers.” Sylvia, for the record, is a man with three stars on each shoulder, and a colleague told the Washington Post he has denied leaking anything. Jake Tapper added nothing but the quote and the man’s official portrait.

The First Trump Brett Sylvia Replies Were Almost Polite

I respect a reply guy who knows his lane. The opening wave of Trump Brett Sylvia reactions mostly did what I would have done, which is read the quote, stare at the ceiling, and type the most obvious follow-up question in the world with two punctuation marks on the end.

MeidasTouch went with the shortest possible review of the whole thing, and 50Seth zoomed all the way out to the history of human knowledge. Neither of them is wrong about how fast it all spread. By lunch on Thursday the clip was everywhere, and the jokes were still warming up.

Then Somebody Brought a 1972 Song Into It

Here’s an admission: I had to look up Sylvia’s Mother, the Dr. Hook weepie Tom Nichols quoted, and then I had it stuck in my head for an hour. Nichols didn’t add a joke. He just posted the lyrics under the quote, which somehow makes the general sound like he’s eloping to Texas instead of getting fired. Regina Phalange, meanwhile, found the angle nobody in that press pool saw coming.

The Fake Country Plan Has Real Momentum

This is where the funny political tweets stopped reacting and started organizing. The idea, which @asclepiasyriaca floated first, is simple: invent a country, invent a conflict, and ask him about it with a straight face. If a general can quietly become a Sylvia, a war in a place that doesn’t exist should be easy to get a quote on.

George Conway took the dare personally and drafted a question about President Almondo of Marzipan picking a fight with the Nobel committee. It’s very specific. I’d absolutely ask it if anyone ever let me near a microphone, which, for reasons like this paragraph, nobody does.

Mehdi Hasan saved the most unhinged version for last. He’s offering good money to any White House reporter who asks about a trip to Wakanda to sign the Sokovia Accords, with bonus points for mentioning that the Wakandans want a Trump Tower. That’s two fictional Marvel things in one question, and honestly the trip would be easier to plan than most real ones.

So that’s the state of the press pool: one real general, one wrong pronoun, and an entire internet volunteering questions about Marzipan. Somewhere a reporter is reading all of this and circling Marzipan on a map. If that question ever gets asked, the country’s got problems. Big problems.

Need a palate cleanser after all that diplomacy? Five Words and a Freakin’ Genius: The Trump Cognitive Test Memes Are In pairs nicely with a strong coffee, while Trump Wince Memes Turned One B-1 Flyover Into Instant Comedy works best read out loud to a coworker. For the truly exhausted, Trump Solar Panel Memes Have the Neighborhood Cats Buying Rubber Boots is the gentle dose.
