I have a firm rule about not reading anything unsettling after 9 p.m., and I have broken it every single night for a decade. October makes it worse, because my brain hears spooky season and starts shopping for brand new fears. So tonight I went looking for creepy facts, which is the grown-up version of touching the stove to confirm it is still hot. Everything below now lives in my head, and none of it pays rent.

Somebody at CNN has the world's most depressing tape sitting in a drawer.

Every birthday now has an evil twin.

Slowest serial killer on Earth, and somehow still undefeated.

Finally, a weight I can blame on something else.

Hand-me-downs have gone way too far.

One rat hair is a garnish. Two is a complaint.

Extra protein, same headache.

Over two thousand years old and still sleeping better than I do.

The original treadmill desk, and nobody asked the dog.

At some point the ocean should just let her win.

I was handling it fine until the body stuff, because I can leave a haunted house but I cannot leave my own skeleton. Human body facts are personal. Apparently dead people can still get goosebumps, which means my skin has plans after I am gone, and my skin already weighs eight pounds without ever asking my permission. Then the FDA has an official number for rat hair in peanut butter, and that number is not zero.
Dark history somehow made it worse. Somebody genuinely planned to bring George Washington back with lamb’s blood, which sounds less like medicine and more like a deleted scene from a vampire movie. Violet Jessop survived the Titanic and kept taking jobs on ships, while I cancel a hike if the parking lot looks steep. Weird facts are fun right up until you are lying in the dark doing math about snails.
I think we pass creepy facts around the way people used to tell ghost stories at a campfire, except our campfire is a phone at 1 a.m. and nobody is in charge of putting it out. The world is strange and a little terrifying. Knowing that together somehow makes it lighter to carry, even if I am still sleeping with the hallway light on.
The lights are on. The door is locked. The snails are watching.
I went straight from here to Weird History That Sounds Made Up Until You Double-Check It, and then Science Facts That Sound Fake Are Real, Which Is Somehow Worse Than If They Weren’t finished off whatever calm I had left. Sleep is optional now, apparently.
