The best costume contest in America has no judges, no prize and no party. It happens online every October, it runs on gay halloween memes, and I am not qualified to enter. My costume three years running has been a cowboy, which is just me in a hat I already owned. These people are dressing as one specific moment from a 2015 morning show, and they are doing it on purpose.

What Do These Gay Halloween Memes Actually Mean?
Nobody actually hates gay Halloween. The format goes “I hate gay Halloween, what do you mean you’re…” followed by a reference so specific that maybe a dozen people get it, usually beside the original photo. The hate is a compliment wearing a fake mustache. Jill Gutowitz skipped the photo and just typed out a costume involving Kelly Clarkson and a singing bird automaton, and the description alone beat my cowboy.

The joke is a few years old, and a lot of people have quietly dropped the act and just say “I love gay Halloween” now. You can only pretend to be mad at two Etsy witches for so long. @bentolate’s SpongeBob fish costume cleared a million views on X, which is a million more than my hat.

Who Remembers One Hat From the 2014 Kids’ Choice Awards?
This is what specific looks like. @twitmercan did not dress as Zendaya. They dressed as Zendaya’s hat from the 2014 Kids’ Choice Awards, a giant cutout they stand behind like someone at peace with their choices. Another person went as Zendaya laughing on the purple carpet at the premiere of Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never, a different and equally valid Zendaya.

I cannot remember what I wore yesterday. Meanwhile, somebody recreated Shailene Woodley’s 2026 Emmys look down to the long red gloves, and somebody else found the color-block shorts and yellow belt Hilary Duff wore performing “Sparks” on Good Morning America in 2015. Princess Diana’s revenge dress shows up too, practically a classic by comparison.

Pick the moment, not the person. Marc Jacobs is a costume. Marc Jacobs at an afterparty in a neck brace, sweating through his blue shirt, is a gay Halloween costume, and that sweat patch is doing most of the work. Same goes for Katy Perry in space holding one daisy, or Timothée Chalamet’s Troye Sivan impression from SNL.

Since When Is a Fingernail a Costume?
At some point people stopped dressing as celebrities and started dressing as things near them. One person is Cynthia Erivo’s acrylic nail, a full-body jeweled nail standing on a sidewalk like it is waiting for a bus. Another is the fire that burned down the Library of Alexandria, which nobody alive can fact-check. A Kacey Musgraves fan made something sparkly, and I will let that caption speak for itself.

Then there is bad news, dressed for a party. The cyclospora-contaminated lettuce made it. So did a T-shirt warning you not to take Skyrizi if you are allergic to Skyrizi, worn with the matching rash, and a near-perfect copy of that viral photo of a grandfather who ate paint thinking it was yogurt. Cocaine Bear feels downright mainstream next to all that.

My favorite is still the lo-fi hip hop study girl, taken to a packed arena and still studying while everyone else is there for the show. I relate to her deeply. I also learned that two friends can go as Elizabeth Holmes and Nathan Fielder together, a pairing I did not know I needed.

Did Anyone Else Get the Vase Reference?
I did not get the vase reference. Apparently it is the vase of flowers a character named Nikki hides behind in Obsession, rebuilt as an outfit with hands holding the waist. Tom Cruise’s crusty old cat from Digger is here, and Lexi Featherston from Sex and the City gets a full rooftop tribute. I nodded at every one of these gay Halloween memes like I knew.

Television gives gay Halloween memes their deepest cuts. Tyra Banks and her “I was rooting for you” moment arrive holding a Top Model photo card, mojo dojo casa Ken shows up in the fur coat, and RuPaul’s “straight is great” counselor from But I’m a Cheerleader returns from a 2023 post that refuses to retire. Katie Dippold’s Babadook wine night gets a reenactment too.

The last stretch of gay Halloween memes is pure confidence. A lesbian Flynn Rider poses with a frying pan, which is correct and needs no notes. Then a very literal Toy Story pun shows up in a corset, and I will let you work that one out.

I am keeping the cowboy hat, but now I tell people I am a very specific cowboy.
Confession: I went looking for more costume chaos the second I finished. Stolen Amazon Package Halloween Memes Are Just Costume Confessions scratched the itch, Bootleg Halloween Costumes Are Proof That a Lawyer Read the Box and a Child Did Not made me feel better about my hat, and Some Funny Pride Memes For Celebrating Loudly And Roasting Gently kept the party going.
Too much effort for a Tuesday. Respectfully.
