Picture it: the app says “Delivered October 10, your package was left near the front door or porch,” and the porch holds one leaf and your own regret. That’s the setup behind the stolen Amazon package Halloween memes all over X this month, and the real horror isn’t the theft. It’s finding out what was in the box.

The Amazon Package Meme, Explained
Every post opens with some version of “I hope whoever stole my Amazon package was also planning on being…” and then a screenshot of a purchase history. Three or four ordinary items, put together, make one absurdly specific Halloween costume. The theft is made up. The joke is the reveal, because nobody buys navy knee socks, a Norwegian flag and root cover-up spray by accident.
It started on October 11 with @lyssibot5000, who hoped the thief was also planning to be soccer star Erling Haaland, and new versions were still showing up as late as October 22.
Famous Moments, Rebuilt
The biggest branch takes one famous photo and reverse-engineers it from a shopping cart. I love these because they’re basically costume instructions, and I need instructions. Last year I went as “a ghost” and three separate people asked if I was okay.

The formula is a wig, one statement piece and a prop that does the heavy lifting. Kanye at the 2009 VMAs comes down to a leather shirt, ripped jeans and a bottle of Hennessy. Lorde at the 2017 VMAs needs sneakers, sweatpants and a box of aluminum foil, which might be the most affordable costume in history. I could make it tonight. I won’t, but I could.

Sports and talk TV got their turn too. The Giancarlo Stanton version gets an entire baseball career into three items, and the Kelly Clarkson one is a white cap, a yellow T-shirt and a backpack with a backstory longer than the costume.

Costumes Made of GIFs
My favorite branch skips people entirely and dresses up as a reaction image. The scared dog getting a haircut needs a dog-ear wig, a barber cape, a salon chair and a ring light. Someone would have to carry a barber chair to a party, and I would follow that person anywhere.

The Abby Lee Miller laughing GIF and the plague doctor “why” kid work the same way: if you know the GIF, the list alone is the punchline. If you don’t, you’re about to be the person at the party everybody explains things to, which is also a costume, and one I have worn many times.

Painfully Specific Picks
Then there are the costumes only a group chat could love. Average Sunday is a pocket tee, flip-flops and a Chick-fil-A bag. Tony Soprano is a bathrobe, a carton of orange juice and a gold chain, which is also my weekend, minus the chain.

Some of these Halloween costume memes go so niche they become secret handshakes: an album cover, a famous corner of a video game map built from three green crates, a character only one fandom will recognize.

Others pull straight from the news cycle and the timeline, like a scientist dealing with a funding crisis or a viral airplane passenger with a very specific way of defending her personal space.

If your package goes missing this week, check the neighbors’ costumes first.
I’ll admit I opened my own Amazon order history while writing this and closed it again very quickly. Amazon About You Memes Prove Your Shopping History Has Been Taking Notes explains why, Bootleg Halloween Costumes Are Proof That a Lawyer Read the Box and a Child Did Not shows what happens when the store does the shopping for you, and 40 Creative Halloween Costumes That Will Make Your Idea Look Like Crap is there when your cart comes up empty.
