Every October I walk into a pop up costume store with a clear plan, and every October I leave holding something called Boyish Snow Clown. That is the magic of bootleg halloween costumes: somebody had one job, avoid getting sued, and they did it with the confidence of a man returning a sweater without a receipt. The name is the costume. Nobody at the door will know who you are supposed to be, but they will absolutely want to hear you say it out loud. Here is the rack.

History teachers everywhere just felt a chill.

Too hot, too cold, just legally distinct.

No licensing fees! They said the quiet part on the box.

Describing a tower princess by her most obvious feature.

Oh yeah, Unusual Events. Everybody loves that show.

Named for her worst night.

Somewhere a small blue village is pressing charges.

The rice is strange and so is everything about this.

One costume to rule them all. Bare feet included.

Some people are worth melting for. Not this guy.

Formerly known as a lawsuit.

Brave enough to wear it to a real party.

Describing a famous brother by his job and his heritage. Bold.

Gotta lawyer them all.

Mixed up two famous redheads and called it a day.

Bossy is generous for that character.

Includes donkey sauce. The box says so.

Every princess reduced to her one prop.

He's not creepy, he's romantic. Ask his wife.

Take the red pill or the communion wafer.

Size: a handwritten 3.

Union benefits not included.

The translation went through puberty too.

Why so legally distinct?

Say it three times and he still won't sue.

Found them. Didn't even need the book.

No laws when you're drinking clams.

Technically correct, the best kind of correct.

Out of space, also out of ideas.

Creeping into stores near you.

I respect the legal department behind these more than most actual lawyers. Somewhere a person looked at a famous wizard schoolgirl and said, no, she is Hermany Grinder, top student at Chogborts, and then went home and slept like a baby. Knock off halloween costumes run on one rule: change exactly enough letters to survive a courtroom and not one letter more.
Then there is the honesty problem. Some off brand halloween costumes stop pretending and just describe the character like a witness who was not wearing his glasses that night. Green Italian Plumber, Factory Worker Girl, Deceased Hero. I once described a movie to a video store clerk as the one with the guy and the boat, and I have never felt more understood than by whoever wrote these labels.
The big stores are not innocent either. Spirit halloween costumes have quietly perfected the name that is not a name, so you get a Creepy Husband and a Governor of Tasteville hanging next to a seltzer can, all printed with a perfectly straight face. My favorite part is the models on the packaging, smiling like nobody told them what they signed up for.
What makes these so funny is the gap between ambition and budget. Somebody wanted a superhero and got a polyester romper with a shield sewn on, and the box insists, with total sincerity, that this is Brave Warrior America. We have all lived in that gap, and most of us have worn it to a party. I once spent an entire Halloween as a pirate that only worked if you squinted, stood on my left side, and agreed not to ask about the sneakers.
That is why people pass these around every fall. They celebrate trying: a parent in the discount aisle at eight o’clock the night before, holding up Boy of the Rings and deciding it is close enough. And the kid loves it, because kids do not care about trademarks, they care about the cape. Honestly, so do I, and I would wear the Snow Clown to Thanksgiving if the box came in my size.
The name is wrong. The cape is right. The candy is the same.
If the off brand aisle is your happy place, dig through our creative Halloween costumes, last year’s pile of knock off Halloween costumes, and a gallery of knock off products that should have come with a warning label. Our Halloween memes and spooky season dumps are fully stocked too. Shop around. Just read the name on the box before you check out.
