I once bought a candle that smelled like clean laundry and burned like a road flare, so I come to this subject with a personal grudge. Bad memes are where the rest of us go after the product breaks, the elevator stalls, or the contractor gets creative. Nobody posts the soup that arrived on a normal plate. We post the disasters, we caption them, and strangers laugh, which is the closest thing to a refund most of us will ever get.

I have a complicated relationship with the things I buy, mostly because they keep trying to hurt me. Product fails used to be private shame, something you explained to customer service in a low voice. Now it is content. A candle detonates on a television, a silicone lid melts into dinner, and the only rational response is to photograph it and invite the public.

Construction fails are a different flavor of despair, because somebody got paid. Somebody measured a handrail and installed it where nobody walks. Somebody looked at a historic church and thought, what if we stacked a filing cabinet on it. I once hired a guy to fix one porch step, and now I have two porch steps, and neither of them is level.

Then there are the relatable memes, where nothing explodes and nobody calls a lawyer, just the small daily indignities that grind you down. The car dinging at you for moving it twenty feet. The guacamole turning on you like a former friend. These hit the hardest, because on any given afternoon I am living at least three of them.

Here is what I have figured out about bad memes: they are a support group with better lighting. Every photo of a stuck elevator or a phone dripping motor oil is someone saying, I am not okay, but at least I got a picture. Every person who laughs is saying, I have been there, buddy, mine was a ladder. That is community, dumb community, but it counts.

I am not a hopeful person by nature. I assume every package will arrive broken and every contractor is quietly lying to me, and I am usually right. But scrolling through other people’s worst afternoons makes my own feel survivable, even a little funny. Somewhere a person is stuck between floors, typing a caption with one bar of signal, and that person is going to be fine, so I probably will be too.

It broke. I posted it. We’re even.

If you need more proof that the world is held together with tape, our construction fails collection is a masterclass in confident mistakes. The relatable memes archive covers every small daily disaster you thought only happened to you, and our clothing fails gallery asks who approved any of it. There are also design fails, product disasters, and meme dumps stacked up for later. Go ahead. Your elevator will wait.
