Gray sock boots on high heels with sculpted individual toes, one of the strangest clothing fails around

I have worn some genuinely criminal outfits in my life, including shoulder pads in 1987 that could have landed a helicopter, so I am not here to judge. I am here to judge loudly. Clothing fails are my cardio. Somewhere a designer looked at a perfectly good pair of jeans and thought, what if we removed the part that makes them jeans, and nobody in the building stopped him. Grab a coffee and a fainting couch, because the runway is open.

Purple flannel shirt sewn onto a ruffled white wedding gown in a clothing fail

Something borrowed, something barn.

Cowboy hat with a lumpy udder-shaped crown and a handwritten $130 price tag

A hundred and thirty dollars and it still needs milking.

Luxury brown leather boot ad showing a bizarre bulging toe on a thick sole

Free returns, which feels like a confession.

Black evening gown covered in glued-on Lego bricks, priced at $85 in an antique store

Imagine stepping on this at 2 a.m.

Blue crew neck T-shirt with a tiny pointless zipper stitched into the collar

For when your neck needs exactly half an inch more freedom.

Wide-leg jeans that begin at the knees, worn over black leggings in a product photo

The jeans got halfway up and lost interest.

Marc Jacobs padded peplum sweater and puffy skirt listed for $3,200 on a shopping site

Three thousand dollars to look like an upholstered armchair.

Light blue jeans with huge hip cutouts held together by thin denim strips

Somebody lost a fight with the scissors and called it a trend.

Nude pantyhose with fake red painted toenails printed right onto the toes

A pedicure you can toss in the dryer.

Shiny gold puffer jacket made of inflated teddy bear shapes on a store rack

Somewhere a claw machine is missing its entire inventory.

High heel pumps completely covered in googly eyes, sitting on a thrift store shelf

They see you when you're sleeping.

Nude leggings printed with cats wearing glasses, worn by someone riding an escalator

The cats are also regretting it.

Pale blue knit leggings with gaping knee holes and a knotted strap in a designer ad

The knees look shocked, and honestly, same.

Mannequin wearing patterned shorts with a large red flower printed in the most unfortunate spot

Someone in visual merchandising had a very long day.

Moschino crossbody bag shaped like a toilet paper roll on a chain for 1,050 euros

Finally, a purse for emergencies.

Knee-high fishnet mesh boots on chunky soles showing painted toes through the holes

Catch of the day.

Shopper at a checkout wearing a donut print shirt and pizza print pants

Dressed for the food court and honestly winning.

Black Crocs covered in metal spikes and a chain, worn while waiting in a pretzel shop line

Punk rock, but with arch support.

Man in a draped gray belted fabric outfit and sunglasses posing on a dirt path

Wore the laundry bag instead of the laundry.

Bootflops, a cowboy boot shaft stitched onto flip flop sandals, worn on a kitchen floor

Business on top, beach party at the toes.

Denim cutoff shorts attached to leg straps and buckles in place of actual pant legs

Jeans assembled by someone who lost the instructions.

Black strappy heels wrapped around jeans in a car, mistaken for a tangled seatbelt

Click it or ticket, but make it fashion.

Hot pink cowboy boots fused with Crocs, listed on sale for $32.94 online

Yeehaw with holes.

White sleeveless western shirt covered in brown and green stains on a thrift store rack

Previously owned, heavily loved, possibly alive.

Basketball high-top sneakers in green, black, and white built onto tall high heels

Slam dunk, sprained ankle.

Gray sock boots on high heels with individually sculpted toes like five-finger shoes

Your feet, but wearing your feet.

Printed Kristen Stewart T-shirt that stretches her face oddly once someone actually wears it

Twilight, but make it funhouse mirror.

Wide white pants printed with a life-size photo of blue jeans, front and back

Jeans cosplaying as jeans.

Shorts made from two JanSport backpacks stitched together, worn with a black crop top

Finally, somewhere to keep my lunch.

White platform sneakers with clear soles filled with colorful role-playing game dice

Rolled a natural one on style and a natural twenty on commitment.

The more a garment costs, the less it is legally required to make sense, and I say that as a woman who once paid four figures for a hat that looked like a startled pigeon. High-end fashion fails are a special animal because somebody signed off on them in a room with espresso and very good lighting. A toilet paper roll on a chain is not a purse, darling, it is a cry for help with a VAT receipt. And those toe heels? That is a foot wearing a foot.

Then you have the mad scientists, the people who looked at two perfectly nice shoes and decided they should have a baby. Weird shoes are where this really blooms: the cowboy boot that gave up at the ankle and became a flip flop, the Croc that moved to Nashville, the basketball sneaker that got a stiletto for its sweet sixteen. I respect the ambition. I also respect a raccoon going through my garbage, and I don’t want to wear him either.

Denim needs a support group. Somewhere along the way jeans got bored of being jeans, so now they start at the knee, or they are a cage made of belt loops, or they are white pants with a photograph of jeans printed on them, which is the fashion version of a cardboard cutout of your husband. Ugly clothes used to be an accident. Now they come with a lookbook and a publicist.

Here is my theory, and I have had decades of dressing rooms to develop it. We share clothing fails because every single one of us has a photo out there proving we were once the fail. I owned a fringed leather jacket in 1979 that made me look like a lampshade at a dude ranch, and I wore it to a funeral. Laughing at somebody’s bootflops is just laughing at your younger self from a safe distance.

And here is the part that makes me soft, which I hate. Nobody covers a pair of pumps in googly eyes by accident. Somebody sat at a kitchen table with a hot glue gun and a dream, and they had more fun getting dressed that morning than anybody on a red carpet has had in forty years. The factory can fail all it wants. The joy of wearing something ridiculous never does.

The heels are watching. The jeans have quit. The receipt is gone forever.

If this left you hungry for more wardrobe carnage, our funny fashion fails collection is waiting with its zipper down, and the cursed shoes archive has footwear that should require a permit. Anyone who loves the hunt more than the purchase should dig through the worst thrift store finds, then wander into our cursed images threads for dessert. Bring a friend with good taste. You will need someone to blame.
