Confession: I have been on three first dates at the Cheesecake Factory, and one of them ended with me crying into a menu the size of a phone book, so I took this weekend personally. On Saturday, at an Ohio rally in Cleveland for Sherrod Brown and Amy Acton, Barack Obama compared Trump’s White House renovations to a dictator’s chain restaurant, and that one sentence is where all these Obama Cheesecake Factory memes came from. After saying Trump “should be on HGTV,” he delivered it: “He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”

He meant the gold, the giant new ballroom and the paved-over Rose Garden. Aaron Rupar’s clip of the moment was everywhere within the hour.

Obama liked the line enough to use it again that evening in Michigan, which is the most relatable thing a former president has ever done. I also retell my one good joke at every stop until someone stops me.

The Saddam Hussein Cheesecake Factory Is a Brand Now

My favorite branch of the Obama Cheesecake Factory memes skipped the politics entirely and treated the phrase like a business that already exists. On Threads, @keithcarmack claimed it as a fantasy team name, other people started demanding merch, and I started picturing the gift card. It is one restaurant joke stacked on another, and I mean that as the highest praise.

Then the decorators showed up. The best of them, @covie_93, wished a good morning to everyone whose home is not inspired by the phrase, which is the nicest possible way to say your house is fine and his is a lot. My apartment has exactly one gold thing, a picture frame from TJ Maxx, and I suddenly feel very restrained.

Wait, Is the Cheesecake Factory the Victim Here?

By Saturday night a second fight had started over whether the joke insulted the restaurant and the people who love it. Steve Krakauer, executive producer of The Megyn Kelly Show, called it “elitist garbage,” according to Newsweek, and a few commentators rushed to defend the honor of the brown bread. As someone who once ordered the Chicken Madeira on a date to seem mature, I can see both sides of this one.

The counterargument arrived fast and in every tone of voice, from patient to extremely not patient. Shannon Watts pointed out that the joke was about the decor, which she described as a mix of Italian villa, Egyptian palace and Vegas, and that is also exactly how I would describe my first apartment.

Meanwhile, cable news spent Sunday asking whether one restaurant joke would hurt Democrats, which got roasted on its own.

Some People Just Needed Obama to Be Petty for Five Minutes

The last branch is pure relief from people who had clearly been waiting for something to laugh at. @SundaeDivine called it maybe his finest line in eight years in the White House, which is a big claim about a man who did eight Correspondents’ Dinners. I relate to the women who said they needed this, because I have watched the clip more times than I have watched my own savings account.

Bill Clinton apparently wanted in on the bit, too. The same day, he said Congress should have protested “turning the Rose Garden into what looks like the entrance to Liberace’s bathroom,” so two former presidents spent one Saturday doing interior design reviews.

So here is what I need to know from you: is the Cheesecake Factory your comfort restaurant, your fancy restaurant, or the place you go to be emotionally honest with a slice of Oreo cheesecake at 9 p.m.? Mine is all three, and I am not apologizing to a former president about it.
