In 2004 I spent more time on my AOL Instant Messenger away message than on homework, choosing song lyrics secretly aimed at one person who never read them. That same energy built these classic memes, back when the internet was smaller and somehow louder. Every afternoon we dig a fresh batch out of the archive, and yesterday’s trip through the classics is still warm if you missed it. Here is the haul.

Jack Nicholson leaning over a hedge maze model in The Shining, searching for the audacity.

Still looking. The maze keeps going.

Nickelback singer holding a picture frame around Frodo, one of the classic memes: look at this Frodograph.
The Office scene of Jim and Dwight showing a dog expecting a slice of turkey sandwich.

Every turkey sandwich is a negotiation.

Tweet about opening your eyes mid hair wash, with a wide eyed Arthur cartoon.
Zendaya in a giant black hat, a classic meme about sneaking a rotisserie chicken into a theater.
Tweet about a dream restaurant called It's Just Shrimps with a $900 item called Shrimp Christ.

I would order it. I would go quietly.

Older woman calling Achilles and Patroclus very good friends, in classic memes about historians.
Britney Spears in headphones giving a thumbs up, suggesting an old 2000s playlist over therapy.

Prescribed, honestly.

Old painting of a woman in bed leaving her grocery bag collection to her grandchildren.
Classic memes favorite: a crush likes bad boys, so a video shows illegal Lego building techniques.
Text exchange where a golf invite gets answered with a photo of a creepy koala costume.

Golf is cancelled.

Shenron and a muscular dragon having tea at a diner booth, recalling a talking pig.
The grandparents sharing one bed in Willy Wonka, captioned the first polycule, among these classic memes.
Woman asleep in a pile of blankets next to a laptop on her supposedly fun days off.

Day off, as intended.

Paintings of Manifest Destiny and Paul Bunyan pitched as giant bosses in a video game.
Woman with wildly uneven winged eyeliner in classic memes about rushing your makeup.
Cake reading you have to do your hobbies, not hoard them, with an angry cartoon king.

Called out by a cake.

Tweet of a DoorDash driver asking if everything is okay after the third delivery that week.
Classic memes tweet comparing heroes of history to someone who has to make a phone call.
Stick figure comic of someone eating a mango messily while a duck eats a banana neatly.

Correct mango technique.

Painted wizard reading in a grand library, labeled the eternal pursuit of wisdom, doomscrolling.
Scarlett Johansson tearing up, in classic memes about a girlfriend hearing a Borat impression.
White rat posing in space, saying it is not overthinking, things are just overhappening.

Finally, a diagnosis I like.

Big Bird sitting in an office meeting with coworkers on laptops, one of the great classic memes.

Half of these are old enough to have their own away message, and the guy searching that hedge maze for the audacity still gets me every single time. I will also admit the 2000s playlist meme is not a joke in my house, it is a treatment plan, and it involves more Nickelback than I will ever say out loud. Old memes hold up because nobody back then was trying to go viral, they were just bored at work with a slow connection. Some of the best memes ever made came from someone avoiding a spreadsheet.

Another dig through the vintage memes lands tomorrow afternoon, same time, same dusty archive. If you still have time to kill, Monday’s meme dump is waiting, and the classics from last Thursday aged better than my ninja costume ever did. I checked, and that costume did not age at all, it just shrank in the attic until it fit a raccoon. The viral tweets in here all deserve a second life, so hit share and send this to whoever used to sign off with a song lyric and a sad face.
