Tesla finally pulled the sheet off its next-generation Roadster on Thursday night at a livestreamed event outside Waco, Texas, and the car did not simply drive. It climbed a curved ramp, hung upside down, launched off the end, flipped in midair and landed on a ring of thrusters. Within the hour, Tesla flying car memes were everywhere, mostly from people whose own car makes a noise over speed bumps. I include myself. Mine has a noise for left turns.
Here is what actually happened, minus the screaming. The Roadster uses a fan-powered suction system to stick to the track, plus ten cold-gas thrusters built with SpaceX engineers that blast compressed air to lift and spin it. The Indian Express has a clear breakdown of the Tesla Roadster’s SpaceX thrusters, including the moment it hopped over five other Teslas. Musk posted, “Turns out the future does have flying cars.” Production is planned for 2028, so nobody is hovering over the school pickup line this year.

Did Anyone Else Hear the Back to the Future Music?
The Doc Brown jokes landed first, because a whole generation has been waiting since 1985 to say the line about roads. One edit put Musk’s face on Doc with the remote control while Marty films, which is the kindest thing a meme has done for a billionaire all year. Doc at least checked the weather.

Flying Car Memes Have Declared War on Traffic
The real fantasy here is not speed. It is revenge. Every person who has sat behind a minivan doing 52 in the fast lane watched that flip and saw a weapon, and the reaction posts said so out loud.

The mocked-up Tesla screen showing traffic stacked in the Z-axis is the one that actually scared me. I have seen how people merge on the interstate. I do not want to see how they hover. Somebody else cued up Danger Zone, which is how every one of these owners will drive, whether or not the car leaves the ground.

Who Exactly Writes This Ticket?
Then the law and order crowd showed up, imagining the poor officer who walks up for a license and registration and watches the suspect leave vertically. Somebody also drafted the new road sign, a yellow diamond reading Kickflips Allowed, Roadster Only, which is the most honest piece of transportation policy I have read in years.

Parking got its own branch, because of course it did. Every lot already has a guy circling for twenty minutes, and now that guy is going to drop out of the sky into your spot like a hawk that pays for premium connectivity.

Insurance Companies Are Having a Very Normal Day
My insurance company already charges me like I personally invented potholes, so I cannot picture the quote on a car whose feature list includes airborne. The insurer reaction posts are mostly one long, quiet wince. A few people skipped ahead to the trick going wrong, and the same clip of an SUV sailing through a highway sign showed up twice with two different excuses.

My favorite is the quietest one: a car door completely painted in iced coffee, blamed on skipping an intersection. Nobody at the event talked about the cupholder. Somebody at Tesla now has to design a cupholder that survives a backflip, and that engineer deserves a raise and a nap.

The future has flying cars, and it still does not have a cupholder that works.
That coffee-soaked door is a reminder that we were bad drivers long before the thrusters, which Car Memes Confirm That We Are All, Statistically, the Worst Drivers in Town covers in painful detail. The minivan in the fast lane has its own support group in 26 Driving Memes For Anyone Who’s Spiritually Stuck In Traffic, and the Doc Musk edit has a cousin in Elon Musk Lego Memes After Grok’s Order Screenshot Backfired.
