How does the most expensive roster in baseball get swept at home by a team nobody picked? Nobody knows, but the Dodgers swept memes started before the Brewers finished hugging. Milwaukee came back from a 4-0 hole in Game 4 Thursday night, won 6-4 at Dodger Stadium, and is headed to its first World Series since 1982. I have never been so happy about a team I could not name three players from.

The details make it worse for Los Angeles. Shohei Ohtani hit a three-run homer to build that early lead, then four Milwaukee relievers shut the Dodgers out for the final seven innings. Garrett Mitchell’s sixth-inning homer put the Brewers ahead for good, and Reuters has the full story of the Brewers’ NLCS sweep, including Pat Murphy’s line that the Dodgers have Hall of Famers but his team has gamers. The cherry on top: the Dodgers swept Milwaukee out of the playoffs last year.
Polite Disrespect First
The opening wave was almost classy. Reply guys showed up under the Dodgers’ own posts with the energy of a neighbor who brings a casserole to gloat. Everyone liked that, and it couldn’t happen to a better franchise.

Yoda ending their rule is my favorite of the gentle ones, mostly because it is the closest a Star Wars fan will ever get to a sports opinion.
The Payroll Did Not Help
Then the money jokes arrived, and they did not stop. The $339 million payroll figure fans kept quoting showed up everywhere, usually right next to the word embarrassed. My favorite turns Milwaukee into the tiny hero facing a stone giant, armed only with friendship.

Every fan who has ever been told the Dodgers are ruining baseball got one evening off from saying it, and they used the time to say it louder. Principal Skinner did the rest.

Dodgers Swept, Neighbors Thrilled
No fan base enjoyed this more than Arizona. Diamondbacks fans spent the night celebrating their division rival’s exit, mocking up custom Dodgers cleats with a broom where a third trophy should be. Some of the reactions were more colorful than others, and a few gave up on baseball analysis entirely.

The rest of baseball skipped the subtlety and went straight to the cemetery. Choke artists was the nicest thing anyone called them after midnight.

Then It Got Personal
By the end of the night the memes had left sports entirely. A crying little soccer fan became the official face of the three-peat that wasn’t, and somebody put the Crying Jordan face inside the LA logo and handed a janitor a broom. I laughed so hard I had to put my phone down.

Here is the sweet part, though. Dave Roberts said he was not used to giving consolation speeches, and that is the whole story of the last two years in one sentence. Milwaukee waited 44 years for this, and for one week, the gamers beat the stars.
