My mother still has my third grade school photo on her refrigerator, which means it has been on public display longer than most museum pieces, and I would like it returned so I can destroy it. I had a haircut my barber described, out loud, as a choice. Nobody stopped it, and that’s the secret of awkward childhood photos: every adult in the room saw it happening and decided the memory was worth more than your dignity. They were right, unfortunately. Please enjoy these strangers, who also trusted grownups.

I’ve come to believe that 90s hairstyles were never chosen so much as negotiated between a child, a mother, and a stylist who was running late for lunch. You can see it in every frame: bangs that stop like they hit a wall, spikes holding on for dear life, a party in the back that nobody remembers RSVPing to. My own hair in those years had a cowlick so strong it had its own weather system. I wore a baseball cap to school picture day and was told, gently, by a stranger with a comb, to take it off.

And can we talk about the backdrops? Somebody decided the right setting for a seven year old in a lace collar was a laser grid from inside an arcade machine, or a fake autumn forest, or a single decorative column, like the kid was about to deliver a eulogy. Picture day had a budget of four dollars and the confidence of a Renaissance painter. I respect it more every single year.

The best embarrassing childhood photos, though, aren’t posed at all. They’re the kid who found the world’s longest straw and committed to it, the kid holding a trophy who is, by every visible measure, made of mud, the teenager who discovered eyeliner and decided to use all of it at once. Behind every one of these is a parent who said hold still instead of are you sure, and honestly, thank goodness.

We share these because everyone has one, and it’s a relief to see that yours isn’t the worst, it’s just in the conversation. An awkward photo is proof that you were a person before you knew what you were doing, which, if I’m being honest, is still most of the time. There’s a version of me in a sweater vest that I’ve spent thirty years trying to outrun, and he’s winning.

Underneath all the bowl cuts, though, there’s something lovely. Every one of these exists because an adult looked at a strange little kid and thought, this one, I want to remember this one exactly like this. They didn’t fix the hair or change the outfit. They paid for the big print, and that is love, even if it’s love with a laser background.

The bangs were crooked. The backdrop was lasers. The love was real.

If this unlocked a memory you’d rather keep locked, our funny school photos collection is a safe place to process it, and the awkward family photos archive proves your relatives were not uniquely strange. We also have plenty of 90s nostalgia galleries, old school cool threads, and family holiday disasters for when you need more proof that everyone grew up a little weird. Go call your mom. Ask about the haircut.
