I love eating out more than I love most of my relatives, and I say that knowing my relatives might read this. The trouble is I’m terrible at it. I wave at staff like I’m landing a plane, I say “you too” when they tell me to enjoy my meal, and I once ordered the same lasagna four visits running while pretending to study the specials. Waiter memes are the one place where both sides of the table finally get to tell the truth. Pull up a chair, the bread’s coming.

The chef's kiss is actually a restraining order.

Nobody behaves normally once a menu lands in their hands, least of all me. I’ve read the menu online three days before arriving, studied it like an exam, then still sat there for fifteen minutes performing indecision so the waiter wouldn’t think I’d planned it. Then I order the thing I always order. Restaurant memes have caught every one of us: the polite eye contact at the bar that gets you nowhere, the silent prayer as the parmesan keeps falling, the little crumple of the soul when they’re out of it today.
The server memes are customer service memes with the gloves off, and honestly, good. Servers are smiling at you while managing a small fire, a manager on his fourth smoke break, and a man who wants the air conditioning turned down in July. They will tell you they’ll sort it. They will not sort it. And the thing that keeps me up at night is that no server has ever passed a single word of mine to the chef, which means twenty years of my lovely compliments about the gravy are stuck in a corridor somewhere.
Then there are the food memes that are pure chaos, and I’m here for every bite. Somebody boiled a crab in fizzy pop and served it in a baguette, which is either a crime or a lifestyle. I’ll forgive almost anything a kitchen does, but please, I’m begging, do not bring the whole staff over to clap at my birthday. I have one face, and it can’t do surprised and grateful at the same time.
Eating out is a strange little play we all agree to perform. The waiter pretends we’re delightful, we pretend we’re not starving, and everyone pretends the card machine isn’t taking ages. Waiter memes let us read the script from both sides at once. It turns out the people bringing the food are just as tired, hungry and quietly judgmental as the people eating it, and that’s oddly comforting.
That’s the warm bit underneath all the eye rolling. Every nice meal out has someone in an apron doing invisible, slightly heroic work so you can have a lovely evening and moan about the parking. So tip properly, say thank you like you mean it, and if you must say “you too” when they wish you a good meal, own it. They’ve heard worse. Mostly from me, on Tuesdays.
The bread is free. The ranch is extra. The waiter knows.
If you’re still peckish, our food memes will happily serve you a second helping. Anyone who has survived a double shift will want our restaurant memes for servers who deserve a long break, and our customer service memes cover everyone who has ever asked to speak to a manager. The plates that aren’t plates are waiting for you too, served on a shovel, probably. Leave room for dessert, it’s the best bit.
