I have a rule at Halloween parties: if I have to ask what you are, the costume wins, because now I owe you a full conversation about a movie I haven’t seen since high school. Movie Halloween costumes are the best kind because they’re a test. Either you recognize the reference instantly and feel like a genius, or you nod along and pretend, which is how I’ve survived most of my adult life. These people did their homework, rewatched the scene, and found the exact right jacket.

Bueller? Right here, actually.

Let’s start with the couples costume ideas, because that’s where relationships get tested. One person always gets the cool role and the other gets to be a volleyball, a giant slug or the guy covered in chocolate cake, and somehow the volleyball always gets more compliments. I once went as the second half of a duo costume and spent the whole night explaining who I was while my partner just stood there looking iconic.

Then there’s the pure dedication of great movie character costumes, the ones where someone recreated a single frame so precisely that you can hear the soundtrack. A yellow tracksuit, a tutu over a Hawaiian shirt, a vest that only works if you know exactly which scene it’s from. These are people who paused the movie. Multiple times, with a notepad, possibly a ruler.

And my favorite category, the DIY Halloween costumes that cost eleven dollars and one weekend. A chef’s hat with a cardboard rat inside. A laundry detergent jug as the entire punchline. That’s the stuff that wins the party, because nobody remembers the store bought version when somebody built the deep cut by hand. I respect a rented costume, but I will never love one.

I think movie costumes hit so hard because they’re a shared memory you can wear. Halloween turns a whole room into a quiz show, and when someone walks in as a character from a movie you loved at twelve, you get to be twelve again for a second. It’s a secret handshake. It says we watched the same weird things on the same worn out tapes, and we both remember the scene with the cake.

There’s also something sweet about choosing which movie gets to be your personality for one night. It’s a confession, really, a little window into what made someone laugh, scared them, or got them through a bad year. Ask anyone about their costume and you’ll get the story behind it. I always ask, and then I miss the rest of the party because now we’re debating the director’s cut.

The jacket fits. The scene is perfect. The credits can wait.
