I once spent an entire car ride trying to explain to my cousin why Goofy gets to drive a car while Pluto wears a leash, and I still don’t have a good answer. That question is basically the root of all great Disney memes: grown-ups rewatching the movies they were raised on and finally asking the follow-up questions. Some are about villains, some are about money, and a surprising number are about a lion’s dignity.

My favorite corner of this is people realizing the Disney villains were hiding in plain sight the whole time. Every friendly character with a slightly too-wide smile turned out to be running a scheme, and I’ve stopped trusting any cartoon grandpa who offers me a snack. Meanwhile Mickey stands in front of a house shaped like his own head, and nobody called that out for decades.

The other half is adults processing the bill. As a kid I wanted to be Aladdin, and now I relate way more to the duck swimming in his money. The company buys every franchise it can find and still charges six bucks for a cupcake, while the Disney princess memes crowd is busy noticing their favorite movie got scrubbed so clean the outlines fell off.

I think these stick because those movies were our first real stories, and you never stop arguing with your first stories. Toy Story memes about dating luck and Elsa haunted by a cringe from seven years ago aren’t really about cartoons. They’re about growing up and still wanting the castle, just with better snacks and a little more suspicion.

The castle is still pretty. The cupcake is still six dollars. The villain still seems nice.

Still humming the songs? Disney Memes That Made Me Feel Like A Kid Again has a second round waiting, and Nostalgia Memes Are Fun Right Up Until You Do the Math on Your Own Age will finish off whatever youth you had left. Bring a snack you didn’t pay park prices for.
