I’m at the age where my favorite things from childhood are now sold as vintage, which is a polite way of saying old. Nobody warned me that the stuff I owned would end up in a museum while I’m still using the same back. Nostalgia memes are the closest thing my generation has to a high school reunion, except nobody has to suck in their stomach or explain their job. Pull up a beanbag chair. We’re going back, and the dial-up is already screaming.

School is where most of this damage happened, and I mean that lovingly. We spent an entire semester learning the recorder, a skill I have used exactly zero times since, unless you count tormenting my parents for one long week. Every batch of 90s memes eventually lands on the TV cart rolling into class, which was the happiest sound a child could hear. It meant a movie, a substitute, and a teacher who had quietly given up.

The technology deserves its own apology letter. We booted computers with our toes, wrapped controller cords like sailors tying knots, and stared at a pipe screensaver like it was the moon landing. These 2000s memes remind me that my phone once had a custom faceplate and could survive a fall off a roof, while my current phone cracks if I look at it sarcastically.

Then the millennial memes sneak up and hit you right in the birth certificate. You’re laughing at Power Rangers, and suddenly somebody points out that a pro athlete is considered ancient at 32. I’m not saying I cried. I’m saying I sat in my car for a minute and thought about my knees.

What these really do is let you visit a place that doesn’t exist anymore. The video store is gone, the corner desk went to the curb, and the birthday menu of sheet cake and a hot dog has been replaced by a theme, a balloon arch, and somebody’s mom filming the whole thing. Nostalgia is basically a museum where you are also one of the exhibits. Please don’t touch the exhibits, because they bruise easily now.

I’ll defend it anyway. We share these because they turn total strangers into classmates for a minute. Somebody in Ohio and somebody in Oregon both covered textbooks with grocery bags, and that tiny overlap feels like a secret handshake. I was a sarcastic kid with a bad haircut who thought he was too cool for everything. Turns out I loved all of it, and I’d like it back, please.

The tape is rewound. The desk is cornered. The knees are done.

Still in the mood to feel your age? Our 2000s memes cover the years when technology was worse and somehow everything was better. The 90s bedrooms collection will make you miss a lava lamp you never even owned, and our awkward childhood photos are proof that somebody’s mom really did say we looked great. Classic memes stay on rotation, too. Be kind, rewind.
