The Bravest People at Every Party Are Wearing Funny Halloween Costumes and Absolutely Zero Dignity

I have watched a lot of people walk a red carpet in outfits that cost more than a house, and not one of them made me laugh like a grown man in a homemade cardboard box. Funny Halloween costumes are the only fashion I trust anymore, because nobody’s pretending. Nobody’s hiding the tape, the glue gun burns or the fact that their spouse begged them not to leave the house like that. I’ve had more work done than some of these costumes, and I still respect them more. Let’s review the looks.

Person dressed as Patrick Star in a pink bodysuit, pointed hat and green flower print shorts.

Is mayonnaise a costume? Apparently yes.

The funny couples costumes are where I’d send any marriage counselor. You can learn everything about a relationship from who agreed to be the plug and who agreed to be the outlet. One of them is always the star and the other is always the punchline, and the happy couples are the ones who know which is which. I once asked a boyfriend to go as my handbag, and he still brings it up at dinner.

Then there are the creative Halloween costumes that clearly took weeks. Cardboard engineered into a toy figure, a face buried under four hundred googly eyes, a padded suit so wide it needs its own parking space. Somebody’s living room was a workshop for a month, and somebody’s roommate is still not speaking to them. I admire it the way I admire a souffle, from a safe distance, knowing I’d ruin it in four minutes.

And the adult Halloween costumes, darling, are not for the children’s parade. These are grown people who looked at a bedsheet and a can of spray paint and chose chaos. Some of them should have been stopped at the door. All of them should have been photographed, and thank God, they were.

Why do funny costumes win every party? Because the sexy version of everything has been done, and done, and done again, and nobody remembers it by Monday. Nobody forgets the man dressed as a bumblebee. Humor is the only thing at a costume party that can’t be bought off a rack in a bag with a stock photo, because it tells you somebody had an idea, laughed at it alone in their kitchen, and then actually went through with it.

There’s also real courage in it. Dressing to be laughed at, on purpose, in public, takes more nerve than any gown I’ve ever squeezed into. These people decided that being remembered beats being admired, and honestly, at my age, I’ve come around to their way of thinking. Let them have the best costume trophy. Let the rest of us have the photos.

The glue is dry. The dignity is gone. The trophy is theirs.

If you’re still hunting for this year’s look, our funny pregnant Halloween costumes roundup is full of moms to be who won the party, the adaptive Halloween costumes collection is the sweetest corner of the internet this month, and last year’s creative Halloween costumes gallery will make your idea look like it needs a second draft. There are pet costume threads too. Grab the glue. Skip the sexy pirate.

Who needs to see this?

Send it to the friend who’ll laugh the hardest, or post it for everyone.
