How exactly do you break a globe? I have moved apartments six times and destroyed a lamp, two mirrors and one friendship, but never the planet itself. That was my first thought when the Pete Hegseth broken globe memes took over my feed Thursday, right after a Washington Post report that Hegseth wanted Eisenhower’s globe for his office, and that his staff broke it.
The short version: the 30-inch globe dates to the 1930s and is said to have been used by Dwight D. Eisenhower while planning D-Day. Back in February, Hegseth’s aides reportedly decided not to wait for specialist movers, carried it themselves and dropped it, punching a hole in the shell near Antarctica. The story only came out this week.

Who Needed the Photos to Be This Literal?
Dan Lamothe’s post went up with three magic words, “We have photos,” and the replies immediately decided this was the most on-the-nose symbol in Washington. S.V. Dáte needed two words. Dan Manatt needed one sentence and a straight face.

The “apt metaphor” line came from @WeaponScientist early, and his point is the one every mover in America would make: there are people whose entire job is carrying this exact kind of object. Michael McKean filed the whole thing under the Department of Impossibly Apt Symbolism, which is a department I would like to work for. I respect knowing when you’re out of your depth, mostly because I never do. I once carried a full fish tank down three flights of stairs to save forty bucks.
Was It Ever Really About the Globe?
By lunch, the Hegseth globe jokes had moved past symbolism and into conspiracy. A lot of people own, or have been threatened with, the kind of globe that flips open to reveal a bar, and @NationOfJason had a theory about what someone was really looking for. Another account skipped the theory and posted a replacement.

Why Did the Hegseth Globe Jokes Get Bigger?
Once a globe breaks, everybody gets to aim at the actual world, and the Pete Hegseth broken globe memes did exactly that. The Pentagon’s statement on the broken globe didn’t help. A spokesperson told reporters it was a replica that is now being repaired, and called the whole thing an “inconsequential non-story,” which is also what I tell my landlord about the wall.

My favorite is the one that says nothing at all about policy. It just drops Hegseth into a stairwell with the globe and lets him yell the only word anyone has ever yelled while carrying something heavy around a corner.

My prediction: the globe gets fixed, goes back on display, and becomes the most photographed object in the building, Antarctica patch and all. Somewhere in that building, a facilities manager is already laminating a sign that says “Wait for the Movers,” and I hope it hangs there forever.
The cure for a morning of watching the world get dropped is more of the same. 27 Pete Hegseth Memes Cuz “Secretary Of Fart” Is A Thing Now is the right dose, SignalGate Memes: 50 Reactions To The Group Chat Leak covers the last time a Pentagon story went this sideways, and Karoline Leavitt Memes After the Least Surprising Job Move of the Year finishes the treatment.
