I grew up thinking the grocery store was where you went to buy groceries. Then I spent a Saturday at a supercenter and realized it is actually a nature preserve with a pharmacy. The people of walmart are not shopping, not exactly; they are expressing themselves under fluorescent lights, sometimes with a duck. I say this with love, because I once went in wearing two different shoes and nobody blinked. Grab a cart, mind the wobbly wheel, and let’s go see who is out tonight.

Man in a store wearing a handwritten shirt asking single females to text him

Bold marketing strategy. Zero replies from me.

Woman in a denim jacket walking a man on a leash through a store aisle

Somebody forgot to put him in the cart.

Man with a long beard growing only under his chin standing in a busy store

He grew it downward to save room.

Store employee with dramatic winged eye makeup and a bold brow shape, arms crossed

She will not be helping you find the batteries.

Barefoot shopper in blue shorts walking across the store floor toward a scooter

Shoes optional, apparently.

Smiling woman walking a white pet duck on a leash through the store

Shopping buddy, bills included.

Game controller box with its plastic window ripped open hanging on a store shelf

Someone started the free trial early.

Kid kneeling to photograph a woman sitting on the store floor with bags of chips

Snack aisle photo shoot, very serious.

Shopper at checkout wearing a donut print shirt and pizza print pants

Dressed as a balanced breakfast.

Produce display full of apples with one that has a big bite taken out of it

Try before you buy, extremely literal.

Shopper wearing a giant winking emoji mask at a store service counter

Sending money, one wink at a time.

Two shoppers in matching orange and red cheese puff tracksuits walking toward the pharmacy

Couples costume, but it's a Tuesday.

Shopper wearing a diaper as a face mask while browsing clothing racks

Absorbent, technically.

Pro wrestling match held in a ring inside a store, with shoppers watching from carts

Clean up on aisle ring.

Shopper pushing a cart through the dairy section with a raccoon riding on his head

Emotional support hat.

Shopper in an inflatable tuxedo costume and white face mask standing in an aisle

Formal wear for a very round occasion.

Car crashed on top of a parking lot cart corral while shoppers stare

Parking job of the year.

Shopper in a camouflage shirt bending over at the self checkout counter

Unexpected item in the bagging area.

Man in a Santa suit with a spiked mohawk topped with tiny Santa hats

Punk rock Santa does not care if you were good.

Shopper sitting on the edge of a refrigerated cheese case next to her cart

Keeping the cheddar warm.

Two adults walking through the store wearing diaper style shorts and casual tops

Comfort first, questions later.

Fashion is the first thing you notice, and you cannot unnotice it. Donut shirts with pizza pants, matching cheese puff tracksuits, an inflatable tuxedo that answers a question nobody in the store asked. The best people of walmart pictures prove that confidence is the one accessory you cannot buy in aisle nine, though a few folks clearly grabbed the last one in stock.

Then there are the pets, and I use that word loosely. A duck on a leash, a grown man on a leash, and a raccoon riding a guy’s head through the dairy section like it pays rent. Weird people at walmart are at their best when they bring a sidekick, and I respect anyone who shops with a raccoon instead of a list. I cannot even remember the reusable bags.

And sometimes the store just becomes an event venue. There is a full wrestling match by the T-shirts, a car parked on top of the cart corral, and a woman sitting on the cheese case like it is a park bench. Funny walmart people do not see a store, they see a stage, and honestly, the lighting is better than most community theaters.

What makes these irresistible is that a supercenter is the last truly public place left. Everybody goes: rich, broke, tired, in costume, at two in the morning or right after church. It is a giant mirror with a snack aisle, and when you look into it you see the whole country without a filter. I find that oddly comforting, which probably says more about me than about them.

We laugh, sure, but there is a little envy in it too. These folks woke up, picked the outfit, and walked into the brightest building in town without checking anybody’s approval. I have changed my shirt three times for a dentist appointment. Somewhere right now a man has a raccoon on his head and a full cart, and he is having a better week than I am.

The cart wobbles. The lights hum. The duck is on aisle twelve.
