I love a bad day, as long as it belongs to somebody else. My worst week this year involved a parking ticket and a gas station hot dog I should have walked away from, and I complained like I’d come home from war. Then I found these bad day photos, and suddenly my hot dog situation looks like a vacation. Somewhere out there, every one of these people is still telling the story at family dinners.

Blue Toyota Prius with its smashed front end held together by silver duct tape.

Insurance is a state of mind.

Motorcycle racers tumbling off the track into the grass as dirt and bushes fly.
Mountain biker tipping over a steep rock slab, captioned with a blunt two-word reaction.
Bad day photos classic: a motorcycle flipping through the air above a sandy hill.
Minivan at a gas station with a towering mountain of boxes strapped to its roof.

Moving day, one trip or bust.

Silver car dangling nose down off a riverside stairway as police and crowds look on.
Black sedan parked crooked right across the middle of two accessible parking spaces.

Somehow wrong in two spots at once.

Rider planted headfirst in the mud beside his tipped dirt bike in these bad day photos.
Small cabin cruiser boat crashed on top of a white pickup truck at an intersection.

Wrong kind of boat launch.

Mountain biker draped over a snapped tree trunk with his bike tangled nearby.
Bad day photos moment: a pickup's wheels hanging off the edge of a high bridge.
Car trunk floor covered in hundreds of broken eggs beside a thirty dozen box.

Thirty dozen, zero survivors.

The tree also had a bad day.

Bad day photos from motocross: rider and dirt bike flying separately down a grassy hill.

Mud bath included free with the trail.

My favorite funny car accidents are the ones where you can see the exact second somebody said, I got this. Nobody who parked a sedan down a riverside stairway had this. I parallel park like I’m defusing a bomb, and these photos are exactly why. The duct tape Prius, though, is my hero: that man had a bad day, a roll of tape and zero intention of calling anybody about it.

The two-wheeled crowd brings a different flavor of epic fails, the kind with a live audience. Nothing says unlucky people like a dirt bike and its rider leaving a hill in two separate directions while forty spectators watch. I once fell off a stationary bike at the gym, so I’m not judging, I’m relating. The cyclists who lost fights with trees deserve a trophy, or at least a better trail map.

Here’s the thing about a bad day: it’s the only story anybody actually wants to hear. Nobody calls you up to talk about the time everything went fine. The guy with thirty dozen eggs in his trunk is getting free drinks off that story for the rest of his life, and honestly, he earned every one. We share these because, deep down, we’re all one pothole away from joining them.

The eggs are scrambled. The boat is parked. The tape is holding.
