Hi. I’d like to talk with you about weird screenshots, and I’d like to do it calmly, because a few of these made me laugh so hard at the kitchen table that I had to go sit on the floor for a while. A weird screenshot is like finding one shoe on the side of the highway. You don’t need the story, and honestly it’s better if you don’t get it. So I’m going to try very hard not to explain anything below, and I’ll probably fail, but you’re welcome to scroll past me.

My favorite thing in the world is when a machine or a sign just gives up and tells the truth. I find it very comforting. A train that doesn’t know where it’s going is a train I relate to, because I’ve also been on my way somewhere without knowing. The funny TikTok screenshots I keep coming back to are the ones where something that was supposed to be confident quietly shrugs at you, like a store saving you exactly one cent and putting it in red.

Then there are the people who simply decided to do something, and I respect them, because I spend most evenings deciding not to do things. Somebody racked up a full set of eggs on a pool table. Somebody poured milk across a dashboard and called it a tutorial. I don’t know why, I don’t want to know, and that’s what makes random funny pictures like these so peaceful to look at, sort of like birds.

A few of these drift toward cursed images, which I approach slowly, the way you’d approach a goose. A poodle with a freshly shaved head looks at you like he knows something about your taxes. A sign explains that the tiger sees you as a steak with legs, and the tiger, to his credit, seems to agree. I looked at that one for a long time, then I went and made a sandwich, and I didn’t feel great about it.

I think we like these because most of life comes with too much explanation. Every appliance has a manual, every app has a tutorial, and every meeting has a follow up email about the meeting. A weird screenshot just hands you a moment with no instructions, and your brain gets to fill in the rest, the way it did when you were a kid lying in the grass deciding one cloud was a dog in a hat.

And there’s something kind about sending one to a friend. You’re not saying much, really. You’re saying I saw this and thought of you, which is a little insulting depending on the screenshot, but mostly it’s love. My friend Dale sends me one every Sunday morning, and we have never once talked about any of them. It’s one of the best relationships I have.

No context. No questions. No regrets, mostly.

If you’d like to keep not understanding things, our cursed images that feel like a glitch in real life are a fine place to sit for a while, and the weird photos I would absolutely airdrop to strangers are a close second. We’ve also got funny TikTok screenshot roundups and a big pile of meme dumps for when your brain needs a little static. Take your time. Nobody is going to explain any of it.
