My proudest home improvement this year was a second hook by the front door, and I told everyone about it. So I was not emotionally ready for people who look at a hill and think, what if the house went sideways? Amazing architecture does that to me every time, because it turns the boring question of where to put the walls into a dare. Below, 25 people took the dare, and I am thrilled for all of them.

My closet has more square footage, and I hate that.

Leg day, but make it scenic.

Same, house. Same.

Gravity filed a complaint. It was denied.

Every balcony comes with a free corner to stub your toe on.

Do not, under any circumstances, enter this room after two glasses of wine.

Zero legroom complaints since construction.

Looks like it's mid-curtsy.

The Flintstones finally got a downtown condo.

The weird houses got me first, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Somebody built a home between two giant boulders and just accepted that the rocks were roommates now. Somebody else built a house shaped like a jumbo jet on a hillside, which is the most committed I have ever seen anyone be to never actually going anywhere. I can barely commit to a paint color.
Then the modern architecture crowd shows up and starts stacking apartments like a toddler with blocks and a deadline. These unusual buildings twist, lean, and hover, and I love that every one of them needed an engineer to sign a piece of paper saying yes, this is fine. The giant golden ring especially. I would fly across the world just to stand in front of it and wave through the hole.
What gets me is that every one of these started as a sketch someone was nervous to show their boss. Somebody said a building could look like a grasshopper, and instead of laughing, a room full of adults said, okay, how many windows? That is the dream, honestly. Not the building. The one person in the meeting who said yes.
Some architect out there is still being asked if the house is finished.
The Ugliest Buildings in the World Are Genuinely Some of the Funniest Things Ever Constructed is the perfect palate cleanser after all this beauty, and Evil Architecture: 25 Buildings That Secretly Hate You covers the designers who chose violence. Bring a hard hat.

Imagine giving directions to your apartment in number 4: ‘Yeah, just take the third left stack, go up two blocks, and turn diagonal.’
