I always thought of baked beans as a side dish, the dependable friend at breakfast who never asks for attention. Beans memes have made me realize I was wrong, and that beans have ambitions. They want to be jewelry, they want to be paint, and they want to compete at the highest level of international sport. I’m not sure who gave them this confidence, but I once ate them cold from the can over the sink, so I’m in no position to judge. Grab a spoon and keep it away from your shoes.

My first reaction to most of these was a polite scream, and my second was checking my own kitchen for evidence. The cursed images involving drinks hit hardest, because a drink should never require chewing. Somebody filled a coffee maker with beans and pressed brew, and somewhere a barista felt a chill without knowing why. I make my coffee with tap water and no ambition, and now I feel like I’ve been playing it safe.

Then there are the beans living where beans should never live. Shoes, a handheld console, a jewelry box, the inside of a laptop disc drive. These aren’t food memes anymore, they’re a home invasion carried out by legumes. I respect the commitment, because each one required someone to open a can, look at a perfectly good object, and think yes, this one, and I can’t even commit to a paint color.

My favorite absurd memes are the ones that treat beans with total seriousness. A roulette wheel of bean shots, a Valentine’s chocolate box swapped for something saucier, and an Olympic swimming final that has taken a very bold turn with the water. Nobody in these photos is winking. The beans are presented with the confidence of a tasting menu, and I admire anyone who can keep a straight face while ruining a crock pot, or in one case, a Croc.

Beans are the ideal material for this kind of nonsense: cheap, orange, slightly glossy, and instantly recognizable even when crammed into a nail polish bottle. Put them somewhere unexpected and your brain does a little double take, first confusion, then disgust, then a laugh you didn’t authorize. It’s a magic trick that costs about a dollar and requires no talent, which is the best kind of magic trick. I’ve been staring at the can in my cupboard for twenty minutes now, and it’s staring back.

There’s real joy in watching people commit this hard to a bit nobody asked for. Somebody went to the store, bought beans, came home, and filled a Game Boy with them, purely so strangers would laugh. That’s generosity, in a very sticky form. I’d like to think the world needs more of it, ideally somewhere outside my washing machine.

The can is open. The shoes are full. The beans have won.

If your appetite somehow survived, there’s a whole beans meme dump waiting in the archives, a fresh batch of cursed images that look horribly delicious, and a collection of cursed food concoctions you won’t be able to unsee. For something gentler, our food memes will remind you what dinner is supposed to look like. Check your shoes before you leave. Just in case.
