I need to make something clear before we start: I know it’s still hot. I am aware. I am wearing a flannel anyway, and I have been since the first of the month, because autumn is not a temperature, it is a DECISION, and I made mine. These fall memes are for everyone who has ever sweated through a cardigan on principle. The calendar people will fight us. The thermostat will fight us. We will win eventually. Come sit in the fake cozy with me.

The calendar turned a page, so my entire personality had to pivot accordingly.

Me and the boys looking tough while hyperventilating in autumn layers

A day may come when I drink regular cold brew, but it is not this day!

Here's September!

The atmospheric denial section is my home, my church, my everything. There’s a meme of a beloved bear in a robe holding a warm mug while, presumably, the air conditioner runs at full capacity somewhere off-frame, and that is a documentary of my current living situation. Heat stroke, but make it cozy. There’s the crew standing around in full denim and leather looking extremely tough while, I promise you, hyperventilating quietly. And someone in a heavy fur coat stepping out into seventy-five-degree weather like a polar expedition leader, because one leaf hit the pavement and the choice was made. Sweat is simply the tax on luxury. We pay it gladly, and we do not discuss it.
Then there’s the calendar conflict, which is the eternal war of this season. Every friend group has one person, and you know exactly who they are, who arrives with the astronomical equinox date like they’re serving papers. Correct? Yes. Welcome? Absolutely not. There’s a meme of exactly this energy, facts delivered with total confidence to a person in a scarf, and the scarf person does not care, because you can be scientifically right and still lose the vibes argument. And on the other side, the horror-movie-door-breaking meme, summer people cowering as the pumpkin spice invasion arrives on schedule. Here’s September. You can run. Spooky season finds everyone.
And the outerwear-window material is where the memes get genuinely poignant, in a stupid way. There is a two-week period each year where a light jacket makes any sense at all, and the tweet acknowledging that vests are decorative outerwear for a brief golden moment is the truest thing in this collection. Wear them now, before the arctic parka era begins. Meanwhile someone’s posting genuine grief about a new flannel currently serving as an expensive bedroom ornament because the heat won’t break, dressed for Vermont, stranded in a heatwave, and that specific closet sorrow deserves recognition. And the pumpkin spice quest memes, charging into the drive-thru line with full battle energy, a day may come when we drink regular cold brew, but it is not this day.
Here’s what I’ve come to understand about this whole ritual: fall is the only season we get to opt into early, and that’s why we do. Summer arrives whether you want it or not. Winter simply happens TO you. But autumn? Autumn can be summoned. You put on the sweater, you order the drink, you light the candle, and eventually the weather catches up and it feels like you called it into being. That’s not denial. That’s manifesting, with cinnamon.
And I’ve decided the sweating is the whole point. Anyone can enjoy fall in October when it’s easy. Wearing the flannel in ninety degrees is COMMITMENT, it’s a public declaration of who you are and what you value, and the discomfort is just the entry fee for the aesthetic. So to my fellow early adopters currently damp inside their cardigans, I salute you. The calendar people are technically correct and spiritually lost. Keep the candle lit. The leaves will get here. They always do.
The flannel is on. The AC is running. The season starts when we say.
