I have a confession: I am the friend who texts “you up?” at 11 p.m., and I don’t mean anything weird by it, I mean one more round of whatever we were playing. So when snow leopard paws at you memes took over my feed last week, I felt seen in a way I did not enjoy. It’s a giant, gorgeous predator with the face of a needy house cat, holding one paw up like it’s asking for one more match.

Here’s what it actually is. The paw belongs to a real snow leopard at Ishikawa Zoo in Japan, in a photo X user @black03_white03 shared after a zoo visit back in 2024. In late October, someone gave it the huge, glassy eyes of the Mei Mei cat, a round-faced cat meme with a permanently hopeful stare, and suddenly a wild animal looked like it was about to ask if you’re mad at it.

So Where Did the Paws at You Meme Start?
The earliest known edit came from @harvest_skies on October 23, captioned “forming a collection,” which is also how I describe the unanswered texts on my phone. Within two days it had a formula: the words “paws at you” wrapped in asterisks, the way people narrate actions in old roleplay chats, followed by a request. The character only ever does one thing, and it does that thing with its whole heart.

Every Gamer Has This Exact Friend
Gaming communities grabbed it first, because every group chat has one person who wants to play right now and has no other way of saying it. The Deadlock version from @pivotuptilt repeats the invite twelve times, which is less a meme than a transcript of my Tuesdays. Then, on October 28, the Epic Games Store’s official account posted its own “hop online” version, and a giant storefront became the clingiest friend you have.

The screen-share one hurts the most, because that friend isn’t even playing. They just want to watch you play. I have been that friend. I once asked someone to share their screen so I could watch them organize an inventory, and I gave notes.

Is the Snow Leopard Annoying, or Are We?
The best snow leopard paws at you memes quietly stopped being about games and turned into a support group. The teary version from @qvini asks “am I annoying” five times in a row, which is the most honest thing a leopard has ever said, and also the most honest thing I’ve ever said, usually after sending a voice memo.

Then there’s the “True friendship” chat from @themeanaest, which is an entire relationship in four messages: a request, an “ummm,” a second leopard, and an “Oki” that carries the weight of every friendship held together by one person refusing to give up.

Then the Fandoms Got Their Paws on It
Fans did what fans do and put it in costume. The Persona 5 edit from @Kanataent hands it a glowing tarot card and the game’s “Thou hast established a new bond” line, which is how that series tells you that you made a friend. Somebody else took it clubbing with a disco ball and a pink glass, and an artist redrew it as a glowing hairless cat that wants to hang out and also see your soul.

It spread this fast because everyone online is either the snow leopard or the person staring at their phone deciding whether to answer it. I know exactly which one I am, and so does everyone in my group chat. So which one are you, and how many unanswered paws are sitting in your notifications right now?
I’ll admit I went looking for more cats after this, and 40 Cat Memes For People Owned By A Furry Roommate is where I ended up for longer than I’d like to say. Then I lost an hour to 38 Gaming Memes For People With 400 Unfinished Games, which is, painfully, about me. Hop on.

Who needs to see this?
Send it to the friend who’ll laugh the hardest, or post it for everyone.
