I spent last night stealing candy from my nephew’s pumpkin bucket and calling it a babysitting fee, which is exactly the kind of thing I would never post, because I’ve seen funny comments end people. Someone shares one confident thought and within minutes a total stranger is standing over it with a better joke and a fact check. I’m convinced nobody posts anymore. They just audition for the replies.

He'd also say it to the barista.

My favorite funny replies don’t even argue. They just hand the original poster a mirror. Somebody pitches a high-speed bus that runs on special metal roads, and a stranger politely invents the train back at them. That has happened to me in real life, at a party, about crypto, and I still think about it in the shower.
Brands should honestly stop asking the internet anything. Ask about commutes and the funny tweets in reply bring up layoffs, while an intern has to explain they personally didn’t pass on buying Netflix. Funny youtube comments are worse, because under any video at all someone will look at a perfectly normal man and announce that he claps when the plane lands. I don’t know how they know, and I’m worried they know about me.
I think we love the comment section because it’s the one place where going second beats going first. The original post takes all the risk. The reply gets to stroll in, read the room and take the win, which is the dream of every anxious person who has ever rehearsed a joke in the car for twenty minutes and then said nothing.
The post went up. The replies came in. The candy is still mine.
If you still need proof that the replies run everything, Funny Comments Are Karaoke for People Too Shy to Hold a Microphone makes the case, and Dumb Tweets Are the Smartest Thing I Read All Week, and I Read a Lease backs it up. Read them before somebody replies to you first.

Send it to the friend who’ll laugh the hardest, or post it for everyone.
