I believe funny signs all start as a real problem somebody tried to fix with one marker and zero proofreading, and honestly, I respect that more than most of my own plans.

They didn’t even try to hide it. That’s the confidence I want walking into Monday, and the rest of these have it by the bucket.

Let them take their time.

My favorite poorly written signs are the ones where you can feel the meeting that never happened. Nobody read the stress reduction sign out loud before bolting it to a pole. Nobody asked whether a speed limit for extremely slow children was a compliment. I’ve written birthday cards the same way, full commitment and no second draft, and my aunt still has questions.
Funny business signs have a special energy, because somebody paid real money for them. A law firm explaining that doing it isn’t the same as being guilty, a hotel advertising an indoor river it definitely didn’t mean. But funny handwritten signs are where the soul lives. Taped to a window in a hurry, they warn you about bees, birds and twenty dollar bills with the urgency of a man who has been personally wronged.
I think we love these because a sign is a stranger trying, very hard and very publicly, to help. They wanted you safe, informed, or at least out of their hair. Sometimes the words just tripped on the way to the wall, and there’s something sweet in that, like a toddler handing you a rock and calling it a sandwich.
Somewhere a guy is still holding the marker, and he’d do it all again.
