I have spent good money trying to get my whole family to look at one camera at the same time, and it has never once worked. Animal photobombs, though, nail it on the first take.

Grinning beluga whale crashing a kilted groom's wedding portrait, peak animal photobombs.

That whale is smiling bigger than anybody at my wedding did, including me. The rest of these critters showed up uninvited too, and every one of them stole the shot.

Somebody's been practicing that angle in the mirror.

If I ever renew my vows, I’m hiring a horse to stand in the back. The funny wedding photos in here have a cat strolling off like it paid for the venue and a white horse leaning into a black and white portrait like the photographer called its name. I’d frame every one of those over the posed ones, and I’d hang them in the hallway where company can see.

The perfectly timed photos get me the most, because I can’t even catch my grandbabies with their eyes open. A dog launches into a family picture mid-air, a stingray slides up behind three terrified tourists, and a turtle surfaces right on cue. Some of these funny animal pictures look staged, and I’d believe it, since these animals clearly take direction better than anybody in my house.

I think we love these because every family photo is a sweet little lie about how put-together we are, and then a camel comes along and tells the truth. Somebody always looks away, sneezes or gets licked. I’d rather have that picture on my refrigerator than the perfect one, and I have a whole drawer of perfect ones nobody has looked at since 2009.

The family posed. The camera clicked. The dog got top billing.
