My wife and I have been married long enough that we don’t fight anymore, we just reference old fights by number. Couple memes are the closest thing we have to a mediator, because every one of them proves that whatever happened in our kitchen last Tuesday also happened in ten thousand other kitchens. That’s comforting. It means I’m not the only man who looked for the ketchup, didn’t find it, and then watched her find it in four seconds. So sit on your side of the couch and scroll.

Nobody tells you that most of marriage is logistics shouted from another room. Husband and wife memes nail this, especially the one where she shares something important and he nods, retains nothing, and asks her to start over. I did that this morning about the dentist, and I still don’t know whose appointment it is. My advice, meanwhile, is worthless in my house until her sister says the exact same thing, and then it’s wisdom from the mountaintop.

Then there are the arguments, which in a good marriage are less about winning and more about getting out with your dignity mostly intact. Funny marriage jokes about being right land the hardest, because being right almost never happens, so when it does, you celebrate like you just watched a knockout from ringside. I’ve been right three times since 2009. She has asked me to stop bringing up the dates at dinner parties.

The romance is still there, it just looks different now. It’s a wedding reception at a fast food booth, or a big surprise that turns out to be a mountain of laundry. Boyfriend girlfriend memes are where people are still in the chaos phase, writing sticky notes on the dashboard begging themselves not to text. I miss that energy, but not enough to go back.

I think couple memes work because a relationship is the one place where you’re completely known and still misunderstood daily. Everybody’s got the same five fights, just with different furniture. My wife once read one of these out loud, looked up at me, and said nothing, and I knew exactly which fight we were no longer having. When you see yours in a meme, it stops being a problem and turns into a bit, and a bit is a lot easier to live with than a problem.

And the tagging, that’s the real love language now. When my wife sends me one of these, what she’s actually saying is, this is us, I noticed, and I’m still here. I usually send one back. Then we both laugh, and then we argue about which one of us is the person in the meme, and honestly, that’s the whole marriage right there.

She’s right. He’s lost. They’re fine.

If you just tagged your partner in half of these, our marriage memes will keep the conversation going, and the relationship memes cover everyone still in the early, sticky note phase. For the brave, there’s a whole gallery of funny icks, plus parenting memes for when the couple becomes a crowd. Share responsibly. Someone is keeping score.
