Somebody posts an innocent question asking what tiny thing instantly ended it for you, and within an hour the comment section has become a crime scene. These funny icks are the evidence collected, and I want everybody to understand that not one of them is a serious flaw. No betrayal. No red flags. Just socks, chewing sounds, and one text message spelled slightly wrong. Audit yourself now, quickly, before you read further. Good luck.

The grooming and hygiene entries are the only ones I consider fair, because these are genuine choices. There’s a comment about a partner whose toenails had grown longer than hers, which is less an ick and more a sharp objects situation under a shared duvet. There’s the eating-related entry that I will not be describing in detail but which resulted in an immediate and complete dismissal, correctly. And there’s the loud yoghurt chewing, which raises the genuine physical question of how a person manages to crunch a liquid, and which one commenter describes as the sound of a relationship quietly dissolving in real time.

Then the texting crimes, which is where modern dating does its harshest filtering. There’s the baby-talk spelling of an apology, which is apparently a fatal error with no appeal process. There’s the person who self-censors their own swear words in private messages, typing like their mother has scheduled a nightly review of their inbox. What fascinates me is that these are tiny, harmless habits, and the reaction is total. Nobody said “I found it slightly grating.” Everybody said the relationship was over, immediately, based on spelling. Digital communication has raised the stakes considerably.

And then the fashion offences, which are the most unfair and the most entertaining. There’s the no-show sock situation, which has apparently ended multiple relationships and which I’d argue is a footwear decision and not a character trait. There’s the post-shower towel wrap, worn high like a spa guest rather than low, which several commenters treated as immediate grounds for departure. And then, at the very end, a verified celebrity comment simply citing breathing, which is where the thread admits it has stopped being about compatibility and started being about a relationship that ended some time ago and nobody has announced yet.

Here’s what I actually think is happening in threads like these, underneath the socks and the chewing: an ick is almost never the reason. It’s the announcement. When you genuinely like somebody, they can wear the wrong socks and pronounce things incorrectly and it registers as charming. The moment the toenails become unbearable, something had already shifted, and the toenails just showed up to deliver the news. The relationship was over before the socks.

Which, honestly, makes the whole genre kind of useful, in a brutal way. That flash of irritation over something meaningless is information, and it usually arrives before you’re consciously willing to admit anything. So enjoy these, laugh at the breathing one, and then, if you found yourself nodding a bit too hard at any particular entry, maybe sit with that. Or don’t. Blame the socks. Everyone does.

The sock was innocent. The relationship was not. Audit accordingly.

If you’re now reviewing your own habits nervously, our dating content is the whole investigation, with ick archives, dealbreaker threads, and relationship red flag compilations posted without mercy. Read them. Change one thing. Or change nothing and find somebody who likes the socks.
