Bless their hearts, I always thought gnomes were sweet little fellas who guarded the petunias and minded their own business. I had one named Earl for eleven years, and I talked to him more than I talked to my husband. Then somebody showed me the funny garden gnomes people are actually buying now, and honey, Earl was living a lie. These boys have attitudes, side hustles and a record, and I would not leave a casserole alone with one of them.

The only one in here who is going to heaven.

Bundled up and still waiting on a ride home.

The birds know what they did.

Ten minutes of peace and the sports section. Do not knock.

The food chain finally made it to the suburbs.

Finally, a cat who does chores.

Say gnome one more time.

His flowerbed, his rules.

What worries me is how many of these little men are armed. I spent good money on garden decor that says Welcome Friends, and somebody else’s gnome is out there with a bazooka like he has a score to settle with the birdbath. Honestly, the garden gnomes getting eaten by a lizard monster or run over by a cat with a lawnmower feel like justice being served in somebody’s flowerbed.
Then you have the ones who simply quit behaving. One is mooning the whole street, one is passed out face down in the grass, and one is flipping off the neighborhood with a smile, which is exactly how I feel at the homeowners association meeting. I have bought funny lawn ornaments before, Lord knows, but none of mine ever had this much retirement energy.
I think that is the whole appeal. A garden gnome is supposed to be the most harmless thing a person can own, so giving him a bad attitude lets your yard say what you are too polite to say out loud. Somewhere a nice lady is pulling into her driveway and waving at her gnome, and he is waving back with one finger.
Earl, if you are out there, it is not too late to get a bazooka.
