Archive of Our Own, the giant fanfiction library everyone calls AO3, went offline for maintenance on October 29 and still has not come back. The Organization for Transformative Works later confirmed a security incident, and the AO3 outage memes started the moment the status account said the fix could take two weeks, maybe four.

AO3 Is Down for a Real Reason
The plain version: OTW says nothing was deleted, and works, bookmarks and kudos are safe. It also says it cannot rule out that the user database was taken, so if you reused your AO3 password anywhere else, change it there. Dexerto reports AO3 could remain offline for weeks, up to four by OTW’s estimate, though it might return sooner in a limited, read-only state. I changed three passwords and briefly felt like a hacker in a movie.

The fandom elders have seen this before, and they would like you to sit down. Everyone else is already planning for the return, when every writer who has been stockpiling chapters posts them in the same five minutes and knocks the whole thing over again.
The AO3 Outage Memes Went Straight to the Apocalypse
Within hours, readers were treating a maintenance window like the fall of Rome. The Library of Alexandria came up so often that I started to feel bad for the actual Library of Alexandria, which has been through enough.

The survival diaries are my favorite, because I have written that exact diary entry about my phone dying at a concert. Somebody is counting down 653 hours. Somebody else is watching the AO3 Twitter admins read 40,000 quote tweets threatening the end of the world, and I hope those admins are being paid in snacks.

Wattpad Tried to Help and Nobody Wanted It
Then Wattpad posted that it was here to support everyone during this difficult time, and fans reacted the way you react when you are crying in a parking lot and a man asks if you need a ride. I would also be polite to Wattpad for exactly one sentence.

Even Domino’s UK showed up, answering its own three-word horror story prompt with three very accurate words. Brands are usually unbearable in these moments. This one was right, which is somehow its own small apocalypse.
Withdrawal Looks Exactly Like You Think
Nobody does dramatic withdrawal like a fandom. The Family Guy jokes alone tell the whole story: Lois staring down a giant pill bottle with the AO3 logo, and Stewie wide awake in his crib one hour in.

My personal low point would be the Michael Scott one: you hear the site is down, so you open the site to relax about it. I have done that with my email, my bank and my own front door.

Fanfiction Has Gone Underground
With the archive closed, the fanfiction memes turned to contraband. Friends are passing around saved PDFs like a guy in a trench coat selling tropes, people are begging writer friends for bedtime stories, and somebody demanded Mayor Mamdani personally fix it. No Nut November jokes were, sadly, inevitable.

One reader even asked the universe to hand AO3’s problems to ChatGPT instead, which is the most selfless prayer I have ever seen.

Stay hydrated, back up your EPUBs, and do not, under any circumstances, get used to Wattpad.
