Daylight Saving Memes Prove We Can Send People to Space but Can’t Leave the Clocks Alone

Every year the government hands me a free hour, and every year I lose it somewhere between the microwave and the car dashboard. I don’t know why my oven clock is still on Pacific time. I don’t live in the Pacific. Daylight saving memes are the only support group that meets on time, mostly because nobody in it knows what time it is. Grab your coffee, which you made an hour early, and settle in.

My first problem is that nobody can explain why we’re doing this. I’ve heard it was farmers, and farmers say it wasn’t them. I’ve heard it was candles. The best fall back memes understand that the official reason is a mystery, and they treat it with the respect it deserves, which is none. My favorite is the poor soul standing at an intersection holding a cardboard sign that says he still doesn’t understand it, a protest so honest I’d vote for him.

Then there’s the labor. Somebody has to change the clocks, and that somebody is apparently me, standing on a kitchen chair, pressing the same button on the stove forty times. The time change memes nail this. One guy hand wrote new numbers on his wall clock, which is the most efficient solution I’ve ever seen and I resent that I didn’t think of it. And yes, somewhere a crew is moving the standing stones back one hour, because history doesn’t adjust itself.

The rest of these clock memes have nothing to do with the time change and I don’t care, because by November my brain has the same problem. A watch with no face that says I don’t have time. A clock made entirely of math problems. A belt made of wristwatches that I would absolutely buy if I trusted myself near a store. I once set my alarm for the wrong hour and showed up to a dentist appointment that was, technically, yesterday.

I think we keep making these because the time change is the rare annoyance that hits everybody at once. Rich, poor, early bird, night owl: we all wake up Monday convinced we’re jet lagged from a trip we never took, and the dog is furious that breakfast is late. Nobody’s in charge, nobody knows why, and the sun now goes down at roughly lunch.

And I’ll admit, there’s something sweet about it. Twice a year the whole country stops and asks each other, wait, what time is it really? Strangers compare phones in line at the pharmacy, and coworkers forgive each other for being late without even asking for a reason. For one confused morning we’re all on the same team, the team that didn’t sleep well and would like a word with whoever invented this.

Clocks back. Coffee up. Sun gone.

If one hour of confusion isn’t enough, we’ve got years of it. Last year’s fall back chaos roundup is still standing, and the spring forward survivors gallery is there for when the clocks betray you again in March. Our time memes archive covers everything else that ticks, and last week’s extra hour meme dump makes a great nap companion. Browse the comment threads for people still arguing about farmers. Go on. You’ve got time, allegedly.

Who needs to see this?

Send it to the friend who’ll laugh the hardest, or post it for everyone.
