I Can’t Even Catch a Bus on Time, So Perfectly Timed Photos Feel Personal

I have never once been in the right place at the right time. I was in the bathroom during my own surprise party and found out about it from the group chat. So perfectly timed photos feel a little personal, like everyone else got the memo that the universe was about to do something cool. These people were there, phone out, at the exact second. I was probably in a bathroom.

The animal ones are my favorite, because animals have no idea they’re part of anything. A seagull steals a man’s ice cream mid-smile. A duck walks off with somebody’s bread like it has a lunch meeting, and a cat clears a seawall behind a woman who will never know she was in the best photo of her life. That’s my whole dating history, honestly.

I respect the patient ones even more, because forced perspective photos are basically a hostage situation with the sky. Someone stood there long enough for the moon to land in a wheelbarrow, and I can’t wait for a microwave to finish. The perfect timing in funny photos like these is half luck and half someone refusing to leave, which is also how I got my last two apartments.

I think we love these because life almost never lines up. Most of the time the rainbow lands on nothing and the bird just leaves. So when someone catches the one second where it all clicks, it feels like proof that the universe has a sense of humor, and that if we keep our phones out, it might eventually tell us a joke too.

Keep your camera ready, because the duck is always planning something.
