Confession: I have never been looked down on in a store, mostly because I leave the second anyone asks if they can help me find something. So I’ve been living through the Kelly Clarkson Molly bird memes vicariously, and the story is genuinely unhinged. On Saturday, Clarkson tweeted that she drove to Art of Play, a Brooklyn curiosity shop, with a few things in mind to buy and was “looked at as if I couldn’t afford it.” Her review of the experience: very Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

The shop’s reply added the detail that turned a celebrity complaint into a national obsession. The thing she wanted was Molly, “a one-of-a-kind singing and dancing bird automaton” that is “permanently attached to the wall.” Kelly Clarkson, in other words, tried to buy the shop’s coworker.

Wait, Was Molly Ever Actually for Sale?
Clarkson came back swinging, describing a price tag on the wall and an employee who “elevator eyed” her while saying the bird cost 15,000 dollars. The shop followed up with a second statement, and as EW’s report on the Brooklyn store’s response to Kelly Clarkson lays out, it came with receipts: Molly’s nearly identical twin belongs to Seattle artist Bliss Kolb, who would sell it for $15,000, and staff offered her a $2,000 German singing bird during the “5 minutes” she was inside.

Personally, I would have stayed for the $2,000 bird. I stay for anything with a free demo. The internet’s amateur detectives, meanwhile, went after the price tag itself, with one account claiming the photo she shared came from a 2024 Google Maps upload.

Is $15,000 a Normal Amount to Spend on a Bird?
The first wave of jokes was polite, mostly people saying the number out loud until it stopped sounding real. A bird that doesn’t eat, doesn’t fly, and can’t leave the building, for the price of a used Honda. Honestly, relatable.

The “something comparable” line got its own fan club, which is how Big Mouth Billy Bass and the Cracker Barrel gift shop entered the chat. Clarkson’s sign-off, “Your store is really cool. Unfortunately, you aren’t,” also became a catchphrase, and I fully plan to use it on my landlord.

Why Does Everyone Care About Molly This Much?
By Sunday the feud had a new main character, and it wasn’t the singer. Molly got fans, a Halloween costume, and at least one visitor who stopped by the shop just to meet her. Nobody has ever stopped by anywhere just to meet me, and I have been on the wall at several parties.

The shop said it was “suddenly attacked by 8 million people who have never visited our store,” and somewhere in all that noise, people started worrying about Molly’s feelings. Is she lonely? Did she want to go home with a Grammy winner? Nobody asked the bird.

Team Kelly, meanwhile, has gone fully analog, cardboard sign and all.

How Did the Kelly Clarkson Bird Memes Get This Unhinged?
Eventually the jokes left Brooklyn entirely and built a whole cinematic universe where Kelly Clarkson tours America trying to buy things that are bolted down. The Rainforest Cafe toucan, the Tiki Room birds, a load-bearing wall, which, fair, those are expensive now.

My favorite part is how fast it went from a customer service complaint to a full hostage negotiation, complete with a formal request to City Hall. Even the big red balls outside Target are not safe.

Molly is still on the wall, and she has never looked more expensive.
