The Mark Zuckerberg Guinness Meme Started With One Very Slow Sip

Mark Zuckerberg and Meta’s Alexandr Wang sat down with Stripe cofounder John Collison for the latest episode of his Cheeky Pint podcast, where every interview happens over a Guinness. By Monday night, one slow, thoughtful, deeply suspicious sip had become the Mark Zuckerberg Guinness meme, and as a man who has never once hesitated in front of a pint, I watched it like a nature documentary.

In the clip, Zuckerberg takes a sip, holds it in his mouth a beat too long, and appears to wince. The twist, per Business Insider’s report on Zuckerberg and Wang, is that Zuckerberg says he brought Collison a keg of the stuff from Dublin. He brought the beer. To someone else’s show. Then he drank it like cough syrup.

One Post Started the Whole Thing

The spark was a single line from Mark Malone, posting as @soundmigration: “Mark Zuckerberg pretending to enjoy Guinness is my new favourite thing.” The quote tweets piled up fast, and almost all of them reached the same diagnosis, that the sip was a performance and not a very good one.

The Robot Jokes Came Back Online

Zuckerberg has spent years trying to shake the internet’s favorite bit, that he’s an expensive android studying human customs from a manual. The full Cheeky Pint episode runs 134 minutes, mostly about Meta’s AI plans, and one swig of stout undid all that work. Ed Zitron’s advice to “spit it out and say eww” was honestly the kindest note he got all week.

I respect the commitment to the bit. Vampires, lizard people, a home planet where ales get chewed: the replies built an entire sci-fi franchise out of one mouthful, plus a detour to his Hawaiian cows.

The Zuckerberg Guinness Sip Started a Pub War

Then the Guinness loyalists showed up, and they are the most passionate drinkers on earth. “Split the G” is the pub ritual of taking one big first gulp so the foam line lands right on the G in the logo. Mark was not splitting anything, and I say that as a man who has split the G at a christening.

The office crowd had notes too: happy hour flashbacks, a Meta stock joke, and the detail that sent me, which @pdxer25 spotted, that after the sip he places the pint as far from himself as possible.

The sharpest comparison came from people who remembered the McDonald’s CEO taking a very careful bite of his own burger on camera. Same eyes. Same silent prayer that the camera would cut away.

In Fairness, Guinness Is a Lot

Not everyone piled on. Jonah Goldberg admitted he’s no Guinness fan either, calling it “basically liquified pumpernickel.” And TBPN’s Tyler Cosgrove, who watched the whole episode, counted 1.4 pints for Zuckerberg against 0.8 for Wang, so Mark technically outdrank the guy sitting next to him. Cosgrove also clocked Elon Musk at three pints on an earlier episode, which I am choosing not to process today.

My prediction: by St. Patrick’s Day, Zuckerberg posts a video of himself splitting the G perfectly on the first try, with zero facial expression, and the internet decides that’s even more robotic. He cannot win this one. Nobody beats a Guinness.
