My husband once painted our mailbox to look like a fish, and the neighbors have not been the same since. So I have deep respect for anybody who looks at an ugly gas pipe and sees a friend. Tom Bob street art does exactly that, turning meters, grates and radiators into little characters who look genuinely happy to see you. I needed that this Monday, and I bet you do too.

What gets me about his street art is how little he actually changes. A drain grate is still a drain grate, he just gives it a whale’s grin. A pipe becomes an elephant’s trunk, and a security light suddenly has eyes. I tried this once with a hose reel and a can of spray paint, and my grandson said it looked like a sad potato.

Some of it plays like 3D street art, with a manhole turned into a frying pan or a curb stretched out as a big yellow lizard lounging in the grass. My favorite creative vandalism is the kind nobody needs to call anybody about, and these feel more like a gift than a crime. If somebody painted my water heater into a cartoon, I’d send them a casserole.

There’s something so sweet about a grown man spending his days making the most boring stuff in the city smile back at people. Nobody asked for a giraffe on that wall. Nobody knew a school hallway needed a robot. But now that they’re there, the whole block feels a little friendlier, and honestly, so do I.

I’m going outside to apologize to my gas meter for every year I ignored it.
