I got dragged to an art museum once and spent the whole visit reading the little cards like box scores. Classical art memes finally give those paintings the captions they always deserved.

Armor for the cat. Some rich lady said that out loud five hundred years ago, and a guy with a brush just nodded and got to work.

The dishes are the real final boss.

Coffee alone, the original self care.

Same collapse, faster download speeds.

Rejected in oil paint, which lasts forever.

Insomnia, but make it Victorian.

Dental plan: royalty.

Healing time: unclear.

Boundaries, Edwardian style.

Taste is a strong word.

Rest is not the issue.

Death has excellent taste in fabric.

Sunset at 3 p.m. is a lifestyle.

Here’s what art history memes taught me: nobody in these paintings was ever having a good day. Every face is a woman getting asked out by a guy holding a stick, or an old man realizing he’s out of snacks. The faces already did the joke. The internet just added subtitles, and I’ll admit I laughed harder at funny classical paintings than I ever did at the actual museum.
And it’s spooky season, so Death shows up a lot, and honestly he’s the most relatable guy in the room. He’s supposed to be collecting souls and instead he’s feeling up a nun’s robe like he’s shopping for curtains. Medieval art memes have the best horses too, mostly because the painters had clearly never seen one. I tried drawing a horse once. It looked like a couch with a grudge.
What I like is that none of this is new. People five hundred years ago were tired, flirting badly, overspending on fabric and staring out the window at 3 p.m. like it was midnight. We didn’t invent the bad mood, we just got better at captioning it. Somewhere in a museum right now, a painting is waiting for someone to finally say what it’s thinking.
Somewhere a cat is still wearing that armor, and it has never once looked back.
