In third grade I was told to use a word in a sentence, so I wrote, I used a word in a sentence. I got sent to the hallway, and I have never been prouder. Technically correct memes are basically my origin story: a question asked badly, an answer given perfectly, and an adult somewhere sighing into their coffee. I’m older now. I still read every instruction like a lawyer hunting for a loophole.

My favorite flavor is the funny test answers, because kids are the purest rules lawyers alive. Ask them to write a question using why and they’ll hand you one word and a question mark. Ask them to explain their thinking and they’ll tell you it was about a dog. Honestly, same. I spent most of high school math thinking about a dog.
Then the grown-ups get involved and it turns into an art form. The funny signs are written by people who clearly met one trespasser too many and just snapped. Malicious compliance is the adult version of the hallway kid: you asked for spicy, so here’s spicy seventeen times. I respect it, and I once did the exact same thing to a group project.
Under all the smart-mouthing, there’s something weirdly honest here. These people did exactly what they were told, which is more than most of us manage before lunch. They just refused to fill in the blanks for whoever wrote the question. Every one of these is a tiny, petty win for precision, and the world could use a few more.
The question was vague. The answer was perfect. The teacher needed a nap.
