Every family cookout I have ever attended had a stack of white plastic chairs by the garage, and I have personally sweated through at least forty of them. I sat in those things for decades and never once asked what they were called, which is honestly how I treat half my relatives too. Turns out these monobloc chair facts are juicier than any potato salad drama, so pull one up and get comfortable.

I will admit the price math hurt my feelings. A chair that costs a few dollars, takes about seventy seconds to make, and still holds a grown man after his second plate of ribs? That is furniture design with a better work ethic than my whole family. Somebody paid thirty thousand dollars for a mold so the rest of us could sit by the pool and never think about it again, and that is the most motherly thing I have ever heard.

The fun facts that really got me were the sneaky ones. Those little holes in the seat are drainage, not decoration, and the arms are holding the whole thing together, which is also how I would describe myself at Thanksgiving. Nobody owns the design, nobody advertises it, and it still shows up at every wedding, beach bar and church fish fry on earth.

I think we love this kind of thing because it flips the lights on in a room we have been sitting in our whole lives. Everyday objects never ask for attention. This one just held our aunts, our drinks and our sunburns, year after year, and asked for nothing but a quick hose-down. If that is not love, I do not know what my mother was doing all those years.

The chair is cheap. The chair is forever. The chair has a name.
