I’ve always believed depressing memes are a form of love, because nobody makes a sad joke unless they hope somebody out there gets it. Exhibit A is a teddy bear’s last ride.

Some of the best dark humor memes are about stuff that got thrown away: a plush gremlin left out before the rain, a wedding portrait in a trash can, a birthday cake drifting out to sea. I’m a grown man and I wanted to rescue every single one of them. That’s the trick. You laugh, and then you feel weirdly protective of a cake.

The mental health memes land differently, because they’re less about sadness and more about the paperwork of being a person. My advice to others is a sunny meadow, my own head is a desert with a car chase, and I suspect that’s true for everybody reading. The adulting memes finish the job, like the toy you loved as a toddler secretly training you for the weekly pill organizer.

I think people share these because sadness gets lighter the second someone else admits to it. A depressing meme says the thing you thought only you were feeling, and then it puts a bunny on it. That’s not giving up. That’s two strangers holding the door for each other on a bad day.

Somewhere that teddy bear is riding into the sunset, and honestly, good for him.
