I judge people by their kitchens, and the most honest people I know keep funny household items that say what they can’t say at a dinner party. My favorite has better boundaries than I do.

Funny household items like this speckled mug stamped with the words Respectfully, no.

My husband asked if that mug was passive aggressive, and I told him to read it again. The rest of the house is just as honest.

Hand holding a white bowl printed with I'm eating junk and watching rubbish.

Finally, a bowl that gets me.

Funny household items include a hand painted plate with a long poem about sharing it.
Brown coir doormat reading I'm your hot neighbor, placed on a concrete walkway.

Bold of the doormat to assume.

Funny household items: a crocheted green figure hugging a spare toilet paper roll.
White ceramic key dish stamped with a profane question about where the keys are.
Funny household items include a wooden side table that wraps around a couch arm.
Embroidery hoop stitched with a crude motivational quote about flatulence and floral decoration.

Grandma's needlepoint took a dark turn.

Three white funny household items: dip bowls reading when I dip, you dip, we dip.
Cream pottery swear jar stamped in red with a long string of curse words.

Pays for itself by Tuesday.

Wooden valet tray engraved with a crude label for pocket items needed tomorrow.
Funny household items include a lamp with a paper towel shade above economics books.
White coffee mug on a steel counter printed with I am not a Russian spy.

Which is exactly what a spy would drink from.

Funny household items like a tiny ceramic chiminea with a log holder on a tray.
Large white coffee cup filled with black coffee and labeled creative fuel.

Two words, the whole personality.

Stack of crocheted coasters designed to look like a cheeseburger on a kitchen table.
Funny household items: a crocheted couch arm caddy with pockets for books and glasses.
Raised toilet seat with a sticker telling users to stand closer because it is shorter.

Brutal, but the floor agrees.

Pair of knitted orange slippers made to look like high top sneakers, funny household items.
White butter dish with a cheeky butt drawing replacing the first letters of butter.

Spread responsibly.

Funny household items include macrame hat holders displaying baseball caps on a wall.
White bowl full of potato chips printed with Chew quieter. You're losing friends.

Passive aggression, now microwave safe.

Striped ceramic key dish painted with a frustrated message about keys not being inside.
Wall mounted wooden rack whose slats fan out to hang folded pants.

It opens like a peacock for your pants.

Funny household items: a soap dispenser reading you know what you touched beside a faucet.
Doormat reading wait, we're probably naked, with a sneaker stepping toward it.

Respect the warning, ring twice.

The swearing pottery is where I feel most at home. There is something deeply comforting about a hand thrown jar that says exactly what I yell when I stub my toe, and funny home decor is just the craft fair finally admitting we are all a little feral. I own a key dish. I have never once put my keys in it, so finding one with my exact complaint glazed inside felt like being served papers.

Then there are the cozy ones, the crochet burger coasters and knitted sneaker slippers, which are basically funny kitchen gadgets for people who would rather stay on the couch. Funny housewarming gifts used to mean a candle. Now it is a doormat warning guests that you are probably naked, and honestly, that is just good communication.

Under all the profanity, these things are love letters to the people we live with. A bowl that tells you to chew quieter is only funny because somebody in your house chews like a cement mixer and you have chosen to stay anyway. I would rather say it with pottery than say it in couples counseling. It is cheaper, and the pottery is dishwasher safe.

My keys are still missing, but at least the dish is honest about it.

I went straight from these to Weird Home Decor That Made Me Respect Professional Designers, and then lost a whole hour to Home Decor Humor: 35 Hilarious Items That Prove You Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously. My cart is full, and my apartment is not ready for it.
