At nineteen I bolted a spoiler onto a Civic that could not go fast enough to need one, and I told everyone it was for downforce. Nobody believed me. That’s why I have nothing but love for the worst car mods, because every one of them started with a guy in a driveway who was absolutely sure. I was that guy. Some of these guys still are.

Black Honda Crosstour on oversized chrome-spoked rims, one of the worst car mods in a parking lot.
Red Chevy Nova chopped into a tiny short coupe parked beside an excavator.

Someone ordered the car, but only half of it showed up.

Old school bus turned monster truck with giant tires and a winch on the bumper.
Ford EcoSport glowing with blue underglow and extra lights, among the worst car mods on the road.
Old Lincoln with huge rusty exhaust pipes and Flammable on the back window at Walmart.

Flammable is the only honest part of this build.

Dodge Challenger with a push bar and roof lights, one of the worst car mods spotted.

He's here to trade it in. They're still deciding.

Silver Cavalier covered in red LED strips and crude bumper stickers on a highway at night.
Small car with a giant brown poop emoji on the roof advertising Dude Wipes.

The tires are filing for separation.

Cardboard body kit, duct tape aero, zero regrets.

Ford Focus front end cut into a homemade pickup truck parked in a field.
Homemade black box truck built on low wheels, one of the stranger worst car mods.
Toyota Prius with a second rear hatch grafted onto its back end, driving on a highway.

Twice the hatch, half the dignity.

White sedan carrying a giant solar-paneled spaceship contraption on its trunk down the highway.

The lifted stuff gets me first. Somebody looked at a Mustang, a Corvette, and a Chrysler station wagon and thought, what if these could drive over a fence. Car modifications like that aren’t about function, they’re about refusing to accept what the factory decided for you, which is also how I approach my doctor’s advice.

Then there’s the DIY tier, where the materials list is cardboard, duct tape, and spite. A homemade Cybertruck parked in front of a real Tesla store is the bravest thing I’ve seen all year. Car fails like these are funny, but they’re also kind of beautiful, the way a guy singing karaoke badly with full commitment is beautiful. No car memes writer could make this stuff up.

Every car here is a confession. Somebody had a vision, a little money, and nobody in their life willing to say no, and they drove that vision to the grocery store in broad daylight. I can’t hate that. I just hope they’re all parked far enough apart that they never meet.

Somewhere a guy is ordering a second spoiler right now, and I support him.
