It was 11:59 p.m. on September 30, and a man on my block was dragging a twelve-foot skeleton across his lawn like it was late for a shift. That is the whole energy of the September 30th vs October 1 meme: two pictures side by side, the regular you on the last night of September and the cloaked, haunted, pumpkin-headed you that wakes up on October 1, because spooky season officially starts at midnight.

That is the entire format, and it comes back every fall like a cold you secretly enjoy. @adamhlavac found the purest version with Mike Myers turning into Michael Myers, a joke so simple it made me angry, mostly because I have been eating Halloween candy since August and should have had the sugar to think of it first.

Darker Lighting, Same Person

My favorite branch is the actor who has already played both sides. Cate Blanchett goes from Carol’s fur coat to Hela’s horns, Glinda gets traded in for the Wicked Witch, and Meryl Streep swaps a cardigan for a bonnet that @oureric captioned with one word: VIGILANCE. Palpatine finally stops pretending to be nice, which took him three movies longer than it takes me to finish a bag of candy corn.

Catherine O’Hara shows up twice, which feels right, since nobody alive has played more glamorous, unhinged women. Adam Sandler goes full vampire, and a stand-up comic in an orange hoodie becomes a glam-rock ghoul on Threads, a transformation I have personally undergone after two plates of crab fries.

Already Committed

Then there are the people who refuse to change at all. @DanaSchwartzzz posted the exact same Lydia Deetz photo for both dates, because a real goth does not wait for a calendar, and the Kanye version runs one stone-faced picture twice, which is either a statement about consistency or a man who never got the memo.

October 1st Memes, Pet Edition

The pet accounts did what pet accounts always do, which is win. Butler Blue III, Butler University’s bulldog, sat for a jack-o’-lantern costume with the patience of a man waiting on a table at a crab house, and a French bulldog got a witch hat and a broom. Scholastic even turned Clifford into a ghost dragging a doggie bag, which is the most relatable thing a children’s book publisher has ever posted.

Cartoons Clock In

Marge Simpson going from a quiet glass of wine to a full broomstick cackle is exactly how my mother handled every October in Baltimore. Add a LEGO Star Wars character who picked up a red lightsaber overnight and Gilmore Girls handing the remote to Buffy, and the whole fall TV schedule is sorted.

Low-Effort Haunting

My people, though, are the low-effort crowd. A black trash bag becomes the orange pumpkin trash bag, the emoji keyboard trades hearts for skulls and coffins, and @eringilfoy simply changed her socks, which is the level of Halloween commitment I can actually sustain. Even AMC’s own account joined in with a Walking Dead before-and-after.

Here is where this goes next. By Saturday the timeline turns into Mean Girls posts for October 3, then a month of costume panic, and on November 1 every skeleton in America gets swapped for Mariah Carey. I am already stretching for that one, but until then I am wearing the ghost socks.
