I have two advanced degrees in overthinking and I still lost a staring contest to a photo of a cat on a fence. That is the humbling gift of confusing images. They make you feel like a genius for exactly one second, and then an idiot for the next ten. I zoomed, I tilted my phone and I said wait out loud to an empty room. You are about to do the same thing.

He's seen things.

Wooden desk marked free on a curb, floating thanks to its shadow in confusing images.

The body swaps are the ones that truly broke me, because my brain refuses to believe a dog can have human legs until it has checked three times. Perfectly timed photos turn every parking lot and family barbecue into a magic trick. One cyclist in here looks like she borrowed a stranger’s legs for the ride, which honestly is the only way I would ever bike anywhere.

The forced perspective photos are sneakier, since nothing is actually wrong in them. It is just a shadow, a mirror or a chair sitting exactly where it should not be. Optical illusions like these make me want to apologize to every piece of furniture I have ever trusted. A desk left on a curb looks like it is hovering, and I have never related to a desk more.

What I love is that none of these took any skill. Somebody just pointed a phone at the right moment, and the universe did the rest. Our brains are always guessing, and sometimes they guess spectacularly wrong. That is kind of comforting, because at least I am not the only thing that gets confused before coffee.

The dog has legs. The desk can float. The eyes need a nap.
